My name is Ian, and to be honest, I started learning Japanese because
1. I have to learn a language in high school and
2. I wanted to watch anime without subtitles. However, I hope to form better and more meaningful reasons over the course of my studies. Anyone else start out for no reason, then find motivation over time?
September 8, 2016 at 3:17 pm #49596Welcome!
My reason was that it seemed like fun. =)
September 9, 2016 at 11:12 am #49597I don’t think you need to have some deep philosophical reason. People always ask that. I have people ask that question in a “you must be crazy” kind of way. But why can’t you learn something simply because you want to. Maybe being able to pass your class and watch anime without subtitles is enough.
September 14, 2016 at 10:11 am #49623Wow, two answers already! Thanks! Yeah, “because I wanted to” is definitely a reason, and as long as one has the motivation for it, one could definitely make it work. And I’m sure there are a lot of people to whom “watching anime” is a compelling reason in itself. And the more I learn about the Japanese culture, the more I feel like visiting Japan would be really cool. Maybe I’ll make that my long-term goal.
September 14, 2016 at 5:02 pm #49624I’m planning on watching anime with Japanese subtitles as a way of bedding in words and pronunciation. I think wanting to watch with no subtitles in English is a great reason to learn Japanese, in fact o of the best, cause you’ll be combining something you love with learning at the same time.

Visiting Japan is really cool. =)
September 15, 2016 at 9:04 am #49628yeah I would love to go to Japan too. That’s why I am trying to save money so I can go in the next year or two. I would like to stay for a couple of weeks at least and that will probably be costly.
Some site(sorry I can’t remember where) I read about another learning tool. You should watch an episode of anime with the subtitles on. Then immediately after that watch the same episode but block out the subtitles. This will improve your listening skills and you would be surprised at how much you do pick up. I used a folded piece of paper across the subtitle area. And like Edward Norton said you are learning while doing something fun.Stay motivated!! lol
