My name is Kyria Joy Osterhouse. I’m an artist currently residing in the northern wilds of Michigan. I love history, wolves, whole foods and sustainability, travel, books, and the natural life. I’ve decided to embark upon the adventure of learning Japanese for several reasons. I’ve been fascinated with Japanese culture for a long time. I studied Asian Art History when I was in university and would like to be able to continue that study with a firm grasp on an Asian language. I also hope to travel to Japan in the next few years to participate in the WWOOF Japan Program (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and I think the experience would be incredibly edifying if I could live it through the language! I look forward to this fulfilling, if challenging, journey with you all!

January 1, 2014 at 1:26 pm #43002Hello Cimmik! ^_^
I’m an illustrator. I typically work with watercolor, ink, and colored pencil, although I’m venturing into the digital realm. I’ve also been known to dabble with ceramics.

I particularly like your Kenshin works, it’s one of my favorite anime. ^_^
I used to be into art, but when I was in high school I met someone so far above me in talent it made me lose heart and quit. In hindsight I know this was silly as art is extremely interpretive and thus skill can be seen as rather relative, thus expression can surpass talent in many ways.
Unfortunately it took me too long to realize that and my other interests don’t really leave the time to continue working in art. Occasionally the mood will strike me and I will draw something, but this occurs very few and far between…
January 3, 2014 at 4:07 am #43050Do you upload your art at other than facebook. Like deviantart or something like that?
January 3, 2014 at 3:30 pm #43055Welcome, fellow Michigander! Just joined in the past week, myself.
January 4, 2014 at 6:10 am #43071Aikibujin: I’m glad you enjoyed perusing! Kenshin is also one of my all time favorites. I was inspired to do those pieces after I stumbled across the live-action movie (which is fantastic, if you haven’t had the chance to see it!). I’m currently reading the manga. It’s always insightful to see what bits and pieces have been left out of the anime, how much broader the story is in the original medium.
I can empathize with your experience with art! The same thing almost stopped me in high school as well, but I feel that in college I was given a chance to recreate myself in an entirely new space… no expectations. That helped a lot. I understand the time element, though. There are so many wonderful things worth pursuing in this world!
Cimmik: Unfortunately I do not have an alternate web address. A web page is in the plans, though, so I you’d like I can let you know as soon as it’s been set up! Apologies for now. :( Perhaps I can post a few photos here on the forum for a taste? I’m not sure if that’s possible…
Matthew: How lovely to encounter a fellow Michigander around here! And whereabouts are you located in our fair snow-bound state? Welcome to Textfugu! :)

I would like to know it when you get your site.
Drawing is one of those things I would like to become good at but I’m not self-confident enough, because I were bullied in elementary school. I was always told that I were bad at everything.
The same thing would probably keep me back from studying Japanese, if I didn’t keep it secret for the most people around me. Drawing is more difficult to hide.
I don’t know why I tell you this, you probably don’t care.January 4, 2014 at 11:01 am #43084Cimmik, do you watch Naruto?
January 4, 2014 at 4:52 pm #43089Kyria: I’m currently residing in Midland, though have lived in Saginaw and Southfield, and have family in Standish and Roscommon. And thanks for the welcome!
January 5, 2014 at 3:09 am #43109Cimmik, do you watch Naruto?
No. I have friends who do. But I don’t. Why?
Is it something you knowledge from you psychology studies, about Naruto makes people feel better about themselves?- This reply was modified 10 years, 10 months ago by Cimmik.
January 5, 2014 at 8:23 am #43128LOL. Something like that yeah. ^_^
That’s the problem with telling people you do psychology, they are always on the look out for mind tricks then. LOL.
But seriously, give it a watch if you are in to anime. The main character is very inspiring. ^_^
January 5, 2014 at 10:53 am #43136I see. Sounds like a terrible curse. But wouldn’t it be awesome if you did some research that proved Naruto can solve all psychological troubles?
I’ll give it a shot. -
