    Hi there.
So why am I here? Long story short I was lucky to live in Japan for 3 years from 2000-2003 and since I left I have missed it terribly. I was active duty military so I missed out on a bunch when I was stationed at Yokota AB, you know, because being in the military at that time did not afford me a ton of leisure to do as I saw fit. Things changed after 9/11.

Anyways, I was able to see some temples while there and actually climbed Mt. Fuji but didn’t scratch the surface of what I wish I had done while there. My hopes are that I can become fluent in Japanese, however long that may take, and eventually my husband and I can make it back to Japan once my kiddo is grown. I am a noob as of today since I literally just started my studies yesterday. You have to start somewhere right? I am excited to learn and am comfortable knowing it may take a while. I just need to make sure I stick with it because I have a bad habit of jumping from one thing to another. I have a plan though and I have written my goals so hopefully that will lead me on the right path to success.

    Here’s to learning!

Welcome! Fairly sure there’s at least one person on this forum who’s currently stationed at Yokota, but I don’t know if they’re still actively posting…

I’d love to visit Japan again, myself – just went for two weeks back in 2010. =)

Hi ya! Thanks for the welcomes : )

Joel – yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if someone from Yokota was on here. I know for sure if this site had been around when I was stationed there (and if I wasn’t so young and busy partying >.<) that I would have taken advantage of studying the language while there. To be young and unfocused was years 18-23 :D Btw, I like your profile pic ……. cats UNITE!!!!! :D The kitty in my profile pic is one of two kitties I saved off base when I was in Japan 15 years ago. My guys are going on 16 now …. such old men!

Samuel – Thanks for the welcome! I seen you just started on this site as well (?) Congrats on a whole year worth of study thus far! I just started 2 days ago and I already feel overwhelmed. I keep thinking about all the stuff I have to learn versus taking it one day at a time. I’m psyching myself out I think. I need to stick some post it notes up on my desk that say, “ONE DAY AT A TIME” : )

I had a cat. That’s not her in the picture, though. She would have been twenty-four this year, except she passed away about three and a half years ago. I still miss her…

Awwwww, I’m sorry to hear that : ( I have been through a few animals passing in my time and it is rough stuff. I am trying to prepare myself for the eventual passing of my two kitties since they are getting up there. I don’t think one can really prepare for something like that though. The only solace one can take is knowing they had a good, long, happy life ya know? Wow! Your cat was 20.5 years old?! That is probably the oldest I have heard for a cat. I’m sure she had a wonderful life <3 I am sure you do miss her, pets imo are family. My last pet I lost was in 2008, he was my childhood dog and he was 15. Always sad to say goodbye.

(= It is true. I am new here too. I understand your frustration of not talking full advantage of your time in Japan.

Anyways you will do great. my advice is to find some thing beside the course that you are interested in to learn Japanese. For me I like to learn songs in Japanese and play them on guitar. Pick some thing that’s your hobby even if your skills are not good enough yet then make it a goal.

At least some thing to think about.

Thanks for the pep talk Samuel :) I appreciate any kind of advice since I am just starting out. I think that is a great idea to find a secondary interest that is tied to Japanese other than strict studies. I think I might go the route of mangas and TVJapan for now. I started recording some Japanese kids shows on my DVR from TVJapan lol. Figured it would possibly be easy to follow once I get the basics down. Maybe I can find some Japanese music too since I do love me some music! Any recommendations on the Japanese music? Thought I’d ask since you must know some bands. Anyways, thanks again for the positive input, I appreciate it!

Not quite twenty. I actually looked into records for the oldest cat – think it was something like forty-three. My cat wasn’t even close to being the oldest in Australia, much less the world. =)

I suppose personally “almost” 20 has been the oldest I have heard of, granted I have not looked into actual world records :D 43 is insane though! That is almost like being married lol

So, I looked it up. Guess my memory exaggerated a little.
