Hello everyone. My name is Daniel, I’m 35, from Cleveland, Ohio (USA) and have been studying Japanesese off and on for the past few years.
I took classes for Japanese in the past (Genki 1 & 2) but got out of studying for a while. Genki is pretty good but quite frankly I’m sick of reading about Mary. Many moons ago I was level 16 on Wanikani, but went so long without studying I cancelled my subscription and started a new account. All that being said – I’m going to start fresh with Textfugu + Wanikani, reinforce what I already know and continue the gruelling journey that is learning a new language at the age of 35.
I’ve been to Japan a handful of times and am going again next year. If anyone is planning a trip or has any questions about travelling there as an American (or whatever nation you’re from) feel free to contact me. I have a ton of pictures, stories and experiences I’m more than happy to share with anyone interested. Including the time I tried to eat plastic cheesecake at a 回転ずし restaurant in Kyoto.
Here are my “reasons for learning Japanese” from the beginning of Textfugu…
- I want to effectively communicate with native Japanese speakers.
- I want to learn about real Japanese culture and avoid the stereotypes (language is a must for this).
- I want to fully immerse myself whenever I travel to Japan without communication barriers limiting my experiences. There are many more reasons but I’ll keep it at those for now. Anyway, good luck with your studies everyone, and feel free to use me for support.
Watch out for snakes.October 20, 2015 at 12:53 pm #48435Welcome!
I have a question about travelling to Japan: how come you’ve been able to go there a handful of times? I’ve only been once… =P
Also, did you take any photos? =)

Ha ha ha, although I work some of the worst hours imaginable – I’m compensated well enough in pay and vacation time to travel every now and again. That being said – Japan doesn’t need to be an expensive trip.
I have at least 1,000 photos from Japan. Here’s one of my favorites…
According to signs near the Ferris wheel, it’s the “Worlds Largest” and then in small print under that it states “with a clock.” I got a kick out of that. Though it’s one of my favorite photos, it reminds me of one of the worst times I’ve had there. It was the last 4 days of my trip in October 2014 and I was in 横浜 for the first time. I got food poisoning from a bento box on the 新幹線 on my way from 京都. I had a terrible fever amongst other things and was stuck in my hotel room the great majority of my time in Yokohama. That’s when I found out that getting Tylenol/Aspirin was no easy task. Or at least my [ex] girlfriend found that out.
Watch out for snakes.October 21, 2015 at 12:24 pm #48438Ouch. Food poisoning is not fun, in any country. My friend got sick when we tried to climb Mount Fuji – he says he doesn’t get altitude sickness, so the other possible candidate is that it was something he ate…
Anyway, only a thousand photos? You’re not even trying. I’ve only been the once, and I took four and a half thousand. =P
Are they available for viewing anywhere? =)

I have like 2,500 or so now that I look… wow I have a lot of photos. They’re not up anywhere currently but they’re all in my Onedrive folder. I’ll get around to sharing the folder soon and I’ll send you a link.
As far as the food poisoning goes – I’ll never eat another boxed lunch from a train station again. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some really good ones, but just the smell of some of that random cold fish & meat stuff makes me sick these days. I’ll stick with かつサンド from now on when it comes to long train rides. That is until Mos Burger shows up in train stations ha ha ha.
Here’s another one of my favorite pics – this is from my first trip in 2010…
Watch out for snakes.October 21, 2015 at 9:25 pm #48440Hah. My trip was in 2010 as well. We also went to Kinkakuji. Don’t recall it being quite so flowery, so probably it’s a different time of year. =)
I wanna try some more eki-ben, personally. I never know how long it’s ok to hang onto them without eating them, though – when we climbed Fuji, we carried two eki-ben with us from Shin-Yokohama all the way to Mount Fuji, about two hours’ travel time…
Anyway, if you’re interested, here’s my photos, in digital scrapbook form. Last I checked, you can view them without being my friend, though you do have to be logged in to Facebook.
