Hi! My name’s Amanda and I’m a beginner. I’ve been interested in general Japanese culture for around 10 years now ever since my trip to Osaka when I was visiting family. I’ve wanted to be a wide array of things growing up, but in recent years I’ve decided that I’d like to do something in the way of Japanese to English translation or teaching English in Japan. If all goes well with college this year (fingers crossed!), I’ll be heading to University next year to study Japanese. I guess I just wanted a head start, so here I am. I’ve picked up a few things here and there, but I’d still consider myself a beginner by far.

Career choices aside, it’d be fulfilling to impress my granny with some Japanese I guess, tehe.

    Anyway, nice to meet you!

hey there oshi, my family has a scotlish last name: Baxter, which used to be MacBaecster. I moved from seattle,wa,usa, to hokkaido, japan, I got married, and have a child. Then I got a job in sapporo, as an english teacher, and before that, I started teaching japanese people in my home. Before that, I didnt have any experience teaching english, but its about the only job foreigners who dont speak japanese can get. So any experience you can get teaching english, perhaps to children, is really going to help. I teach children ages 2 to 6, sometimes older children.

    Thank you kanjiman :).

Hi Chado, your family has a more Scottish surname than I do! I have had a small amount of being in the English teaching environment. A year ago I was in a placement for a few weeks in an International Nursery, I was basically shadowing the Nursery teachers as they taught children some basics, it’s not much but it’s a start I guess. I’m looking into getting more experience while I’m at University of course.

    Och aye the noo!

Y’know, in my incredibly long life of 19 years, I don’t think I’ve ever *actually* heard anyone say that here before :P Wonder where it came from originally…?

But yeah, so what uni(s) are you applying for? I’m at Edinburgh just now and we have a Japanese degree course; not really sure how common the subject is among other unis. I’m guessing what with the tuition fees n all that you’re not considering anywhere in England, no? :P

    Thanks Tsetycoon :)

Hi MisterM, I kid you not.. I was actually going to begin my original post with that y’know.
It was between Edinburgh and Leeds, but you’re exactly right, because of the tuition fees I’m rooting for Edinburgh. From the research I’ve done there’s not that much else in Unis for Japanese. I’ve seen other Unis in England and they have Japanese combined with something else which I’m not interested in, like Japanese with Law, Japanese.. and German. I’m in Glasgow at the moment so Edinburgh isn’t too far away either.

@oshi: I’m glad you didn’t begin your post that way because then it would make people think we actually *do* say it! :D Let’s hope you get into Edinburgh then, for the sake of your bank balance. Fantastic city to be in; I’m staying in 1st year student accommodation just now and I love it here :D Gotta move back home at the end of May though :( Any questions about the uni, the city or just Japanese in general, feel free :)

There’s around 7 universities in England that offer Japanese Studies and/or Japanese Language, there’s a few more that do some sort of Japanese Economics course too. The selection is really poor compared to something like Computer Science, kind of annoying.

My girlfriend studies English at SOAS which is where I might go for Japanese but I’m not too sure yet, there’s only that place and one other university that’s convenient for me to commute to. @_@

@Mark: What is that supposed to say?

I have no clue as to why I wrote that in Japanese, when it was a question for the maker of this self introduction…
I wanted to ask who your oshi is – assuming you have one, though the picture and the username gives a slight hint :p

@MisterM I know, I don’t want to start some Scottish stereotypes :$. I hope so too, Edinburgh is my first choice whereas English options would be fallbacks, here’s hoping I won’t need them. I’ve been like 3 times in my life so I don’t know it very well but I know enough to know it’s a lovely place, would probably much prefer it to Glasgow. Aww, that sucks :( Thank you, I’ll keep you in mind :)!

@Yggbert Yeah I didn’t actually think the course would be so scarce in this country until the more I looked into and I’m like… okay, so, Edinburgh is my only option for Scotland, at all. I had a look into SOAS as well, since it’s one of very few choices! Again it would be something I’d look into more later on since it’s so far away and probably costly :(

@マーク・ウェーバー Haha, it’s gotta be Ai Takahashi. Yours? Assuming you have one too, that is :3

Never heard of her before, what group is she part of? And I haven’t got any oshi, even though Missing assures me I will get one eventually…
