はじめまして。 My screen name is icaruspandora, but you can call me icky.

Okay, that just sounds wrong. Amy. You can call me Amy.

I know very (very, very, very, very) little Japanese. I’m here because I want to be able to stumble through a manga in the original language by the end of the year. So reading kanji is going to be my focus. I’m using a lot of different resources, most of them free. Textfugu is one of the few I’ve paid for and I’m more than willing to plunk down the money if it means I can learn kanji without feeling as if my eyes are going to mutiny at any second.

I hope I’m able to contribute here as well…eventually. Looking forward to it.

よろしくおねがいします。(I’m also really hoping I used the hiragana correctly. Please forgive me if I haven’t.)

Hi Amy! I’m new here, too, and one of my goals is to learn enough Japanese to be able to watch un-subbed anime and seiyuu events/interviews. (A tiny bit similar to your goal, maybe?) ^_^ Welcome!

    Thanks!

That would be nice, too. I like anime, but I don’t have as many favorites as I do with manga. Maybe I’d like it better if I could understand the original dialogue? I hadn’t considered that.

Do you have any particular shows/events/interviews you’re looking forward to watching un-subbed?

    Welcome to TextFugu! ^_^.

I’ve recently started as well, and so far it’s been awesome. Depending on your background in Hiragana/Katakana, you may want to look at using WaniKani (if you haven’t already). It’s made by Koichi (who also created TextFugu), and is focused primarily on teaching kanji. I’ve just started using WK too, and it complements TF nicely.

    Good luck on your studies!

    Amy –

Haha, well, I’m a total fangirl, and as of right now, the first thing I’d do if I could understand spoken Japanese would be to watch all of the Saiyuki (based on the anime) stage shows, followed closely by the Tiger & Bunny and Bleach shows!

What are your favorite manga you’re looking forward to reading/translating? :)

@LilRicki: The seiyuu cast for Saiyuki is hilarious! I totally did not know they had stage shows! Ah! Must research! And did you also mean that they have Tiger and Bunny stage shows, too?!?!

    Welcome to TextFugu!

As Pantome mentioned, it sounds like you would be a good candidate for WaniKani. It’s a separate system developed by Koichi that solely focuses on Kanji. It works like a game with 50 levels. Most of the Kanji taught in TextFugu are covered in the first 10 levels, so there’s a heap more and it’s even better than using Anki.

You’ll find a link to it with a discount on the dashboard:

    http://www.textfugu.com/dashboard/

You have to sign up for the site and they will send you an invite to join. The first 2 levels are free.

Also check out this guide for using Anki 2 with TextFugu:

You can also use the following thread to track your progress and share your ideas/concerns when you finish a season (gain a level ^_^):

And here is a thread with a list of additional Japanese resources you may find helpful:

@YokaiAkito – I love the Saiyuki seiyuu cast! Unfortunately, the stage show has different actors, but it’s still entertaining. The Tiger & Bunny stage show, however, does indeed use the two main seiyuu for the lead roles!

@LilRicki: Ah! Thanks for that knowledge! I will definately check them out. And good luck with your studies~!

Pantome & Akibujin: Thanks! WaniKani sounds very interesting. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to afford it, but I might try the first two levels, just to see what it’s like. (I’ve never been involved in a beta before, so that sounds interesting, too.) (Thank you for the links, Akibujin!)

LilRicki: Manga? Well, let’s see…Pandora Hearts, Akatsuki no Yona, Ao Haru Ride, Kamisama Hajimemashita (I really hope I spelled that right), and Penguin Prince (a collection of shorts by the same mangaka who created Dengeki Daisy and Beast Master). I’d also like to read the light novel series, Earl and Fairy. I have the first four manga volumes that Viz put out, but the story doesn’t end in the final volume. :( It may be a while before I can read something like a novel in Japanese, but that’s a long-term goal for me.

I watched a little of Tiger and Bunny about a year ago, but it didn’t interest me at the time. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, though, so I may try again soon. Bleach looks incredible. I’ve heard it takes a while to get going?

YokaiAhito: *Squee!* Are you closer to the Red River or farther away? Re: manga, what’s your favorite series?
