It works. ^^
May 23, 2011 at 2:54 pm #11005Ok who am I here? HELLO WORLD!
Koichi… while you’re tuning things up, would you mind setting links posted to auto open in another tab or browser? That’d be great.
EDIT: oh hay edit works =)
Unless the user posting is the only one that see’s their real name, you may want to get a nickname or some kind of feature present. I don’t want the CIA knowing my fluency in Japanese…

May 23, 2011 at 2:57 pm #11010Hmmm… I don’t actually know how to do that. You wouldn’t happen to know, by any chance?
Good idea though… pretty standard for forums to auto-open links in new window/tab, yeah?
May 23, 2011 at 2:59 pm #11012It’s probably just a setting in your control panel… but I’ve never played with forums before =P (see? I don’t even know the right syntax to embed an image!)
May 23, 2011 at 3:02 pm #11013@Harris – you can change the username thing – sadly that’s what it’s set to as default… Might be able to default it to just first name, but have to default it to something that all members have in their profile, and most people don’t have nicknames set up :(
In the meantime, more info on how to change it here:
http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/forum-how-to/As for links… don’t think it’s in the settings :( bbpress is pretty bare bones. Will have to ask in the bbpress forums to see if any bbpress pros know anything!
Also wonder if it’ll just get something like that in an update. This is still beta software…. will poke my head in and see if they’ll be doing this! Thanks!
May 23, 2011 at 3:07 pm #11016Well it’s bbpress… no promises but I’ll see what I can find. Yes! figured out how to keep my real name out of my posts! I don’t care personally, but some people may get edgy =)
some quick googling turns up bb-config.php … that sounds promising and definitely something that could break it all in one go. The best kind of file!
May 23, 2011 at 3:14 pm #11021@Narcoleptic – One thing to note is that it’s the bbpress wordpress plugin (just came out into beta)… Don’t actually think there is a bb-config.php in this new version :( Will keep looking though.
So far zero documentation (until they get closer to “release copy” apparently), but we’ll see how it goes with asking the creators!
May 23, 2011 at 3:18 pm #11022Yup… right behind you =) just found some info on plugins. Looks like there is one for ‘open in new window’
Not sure how old this post is but http://www.docswordpressguide.com/adding-a-forum
Plugins
These are included in the bbPress file from this site. Activate the ones you want:
•Akismet — A free spam prevention service, recommended. Click on the link and follow the directions. After it’s activated, an ‘Akismet’ entry will appear in the ‘Settings’ area where you punch in the code they email you.•BB WYSIWYG Editor — A much better editor
•Human Test — Anti-bot measure during the registration process
•New User Notification — Informs moderator when someone’s registered
•Open In New Window — Opens link in new browser window
•Terms Of Service — A block of text displaying at the bottom of the registration page
•Yearlong Cookies — Apparently there’s some time expiration on cookies (which remember the user’s password) so this extends it
May 23, 2011 at 3:20 pm #11023ah yeah :( That article is for bbpress standalone, sadly, back when bbpress was apparently the bee’s knees. :(
May 23, 2011 at 3:23 pm #11025You should delegate forum administration to your new lacky…
May 23, 2011 at 3:25 pm #11026@Narcoleptic – haha, definitely will – but I also want to make sure I’m doing stuff in the forum more, too! It’s fun here… :D
May 23, 2011 at 3:36 pm #11030So textfugu has always loaded really slow (like bonkers slow) on my work computer which was annoying but tolerable due to the length of time I spent on each page. Now that the forums are integrated, they load equally slow but it’s far more annoying because I tend to flip from page to page pretty quickly.
It’s not a problem at home but since I do most of my studying (and forumulating) at work, I would appreciate any advice on how to solve this problem. I’ve used three different browsers all with similar results.May 23, 2011 at 3:48 pm #11036hhhhmmm, I imagine slowness is my fault. I’m not so good at optimizing things for speed. I’ll poke around to see what I can do, and maybe have someone who focuses on speed take a look. In the meantime, I’ve upped my server resources to the max it’ll let me :D Hopefully that speeds things up at least a little!
Question, though – is your work internet slower than home internet? Or… would you say your internet is a similar speed, but your home computer is better than your work one? I’m guessing it’s one of those things (why home is faster than work) but knowing which one it is will help me figure this out, I think! Thanks!
