Hi there! I’m Dev, and I have followed along the free season even though I was pretty much set on committing to TextFugu from the start. I’m an actor and filmmaker with a strong interest in storytelling, and I particularly enjoyed stories told through Japanese anime and video games. I still find myself drawing inspiration from both of those mediums as I grow older as both a person and an artist.
Regarding the art of filmmaking as a career, the greatest advice I ever heard was “figure out who your favorite director is, and try to get as close to them as possible”. I’ve got plenty of American favorites, but I found myself thinking about how much respect I have for some Japanese video game developers who’ve put together, in my humble opinion, some great, believable stories and have integrated them into the medium successfully. I understand it’s difficult and not at the forefront of every video game producer’s mind, considering many “hunt for this item” elements or quests make for counter-productive plot devices which can harm the suspension of disbelief. However, I’m excited at the thought to somehow integrate my interests for acting, filmmaking, and video games into some great projects and stories worth telling. I feel like I can get much closer to realizing that by getting closer to japanese game developers who love what they do and take it very seriously – and what better way than to at least learn their language. Who knows; in an ideal world perhaps learning the language can get my foot in the door doing some Japanese commercials, meeting and working with some renowned japanese directors, and hopefully introduce myself to the makers of Final Fantasy as a business partner for a wonderful collaboration between the worlds of film and gaming. I understand it’s a very specific, challenging and perhaps idealistic goal, but whatever chance I would have would drop to 0% unless I acquire the skills necessary to get it all done.
I also would love to go visit Japan and inevitably embarrass myself as someone who also loves the japanese culture and new, exciting places that are radically different than probably anything that I’m used to. Additionally I’m interested in learning more about Japanese humor.
I’m eager and excited to learn Japanese. :) Thank you for reading and I look forward to talking to you all.

July 19, 2012 at 6:41 am #33410Hello and welcome! Your goals are very admirable and exciting! Best of luck with all your aspirations. If a goal isn’t challenging or idealistic to some degree, it probably isn’t worth pursuing!
