Hello!
My name is James and I just started TextFugu as a self-directed learning project. My interest in Japan started back in 1983 when I saw my first (unsubtitled) episode of “Dirty Pair” at a sci-fi convention. From there it spun off into bootleg Unicorn, Blue Hearts and Boowy tapes (later groups like Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Skapara and 10-Feet, thanks to the internet) in college. Despite being interested in Japan, I was convinced by my advisors to study Russian instead (this was circa 1988-1992 when we still did not know that Russians had no money to buy anything and had nothing to sell) and wound up taking six odd years of Russian. I am hoping that my mastering Cyrillic left my mind plastic enough to take a run at Hiragana and Katakana. This is mainly a vanity project, where I am learning for the sake of learning. Sure, it would be nice to watch taiga’s without subtitles, but trying to keep it realistic and I am hoping to at least reach an IRL Level 1 or 2.

July 11, 2014 at 6:12 am #45745I sure wish I was fluent in Russian! I am “functional” in Russian and am much, much better at reading than I am at conversations. I hope I did not give you the impression I thought learning Russian was a waste! It was not! I certainly enjoyed it and all that went along with it! I just have always wanted to learn Japanese. And Finnish. I figure I will try Japanese first. ^_^
July 11, 2014 at 7:09 am #45748Oh wow but that’s still very good! (*゚ロ゚) Great job! Oh I didn’t get that impression at all, don’t worry ~ I guess it’s just me being silly again (;´∀`)> Well that’s great that you enjoyed it so much :) – And wow Finnish sounds very cool too! Good luck with everything! ^_^
July 11, 2014 at 4:04 pm #45776Howdy and welcome!!
I can definitely understand your reasoning for learning Japanese. A large part of why I started learning the language (back when I was only semi-serious about it) was a way to exercise my brain, and I would definitely have considered it a “vanity project” as you have.
But then I kept going, one thing led to another, and now I’m full on learning Japanese. So I’m not saying don’t get hardcore about it, but just be aware that it *may* suck you in ;) It’s a pretty fantastic thing.
Anyways, enjoy your time here! Hope you stick around passed the Katakana lesson!
