Hiya! I’m Cory, and I’m from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. I’ve been using Textfugu for about 5 weeks now and I’m really enjoying it.

There’s a few reasons why I’m keen to learn Japanese. First is music. I love many Japanese bands (even though I can’t understand the lyrics, the music is fun, catchy), and Scandal are my favourite. I flew to Singapore last March to see them play live, scored a pass to the autograph session too. (o:

Second is TV/Movies. K-ON is sooo cool, and subtitles don’t do it any justice. Ditto Densha Otoko.

Third (and most important) is holiday time. I stayed in Osaka last year, successfully taking the train to Hiroshima and getting entry to the Shonen Knife in-store in Osaka (that was hard, as the lady at Tower Records was speaking to me in Japanese the entire time, and all I could do was point and look dumb.)

Some friends just moved over there to teach English, so to visit them and speak to/understand the locals (without looking dumb) would be great.

And fourth (which combines all of the above) is that I recently quit drinking and need something worthwhile to spend my money on. So Textfugu and flights it is!

Being 35, I thought it’d be difficult to learn something new, but so far it’s going pretty sweet. I’m taking my time, spending an hour or so every night at work (it’s super-quiet here) and hope to be able to competently read and write Hiragana, Katakana and basic Kanji by Christmas.

I think that’ll do; don’t want to bore you all with my life story.

    Seeya!

That was a nice read. Good job quitting and good luck with your studies!

Hahah, I do that too. Studying at work is the best (there’s really nothing else to do there at night), it’s like being a student but getting fairly good money for it.

    Thanks and thanks!

The only bit I don’t like is when I spend too much time on it at work, because I’ll get home, sleep and dream involuntarily of reading/writing the same Hiragana characters over and over again for 8 hours. Sort of like getting an awful song stuck in your head.
