Hello! I’m new to Textfugu, but I’ve been self studying Japanese for a some time. That said, my old sources seemed to be all about short cuts, and I never was able to find out why stuff worked a certain way in Japanese. I’m hoping to get some of the whys answered here. :)
The reasons I’m learning Japanese can be summarize as:
* I want to play more Japanese video games and board games. (They have all of the most creative and interesting games.)
* I want to write my notes at work in Japanese.
* I want the satisfaction of doing something I didn’t think I could do.Also, I went to Japan in May, and almost everyone I talked to in Tokyo spoke “a little bit” of English which turns out to be pretty close to fluent if not fluent, but when I left Tokyo it was a different story. I don’t want to have to put any more shop keepers through the 15 minute ordeal of miming to me that the item I want to buy is a raffle prize, and not for sale. If I spend hours, months, and years, learning Japanese I can save shop keepers like him a lot of time. That poor guy. ;)
November 5, 2011 at 8:13 pm #20546Howdy! Funny story about the shopkeeper. How cool that you were able to visit Japan! That will make everyone here jealous. ;)
Good luck with your studies!

November 6, 2011 at 9:54 am #20559I am really confused…
Write your notes at work in Japanese ? :)
Just make sure you aren’t a doctor…nurses will hurt you ;)
Good luck learning Japanese, sounds like youll be ok :)November 7, 2011 at 9:47 am #20595Haha, that poor shopkeeper. I’m sure next time around your Japanese will be much better! :)
November 7, 2011 at 12:15 pm #20605Yeah, I’m a software developer, and I sometimes have to take notes during meetings. The notes are just for me, and I like the idea of writing them in a language most people around the office cannot read. I promise I’m not building a super villain death ray or anything. Besides I’m under the impression that Japanese, as a language, is more well suited for building giant robots. Hmm, that gives me an idea…
November 7, 2011 at 4:28 pm #20623Howdy hey, =)
Games are what also got me interested in learning Japanese to begin with. One of my favorite game series (Rockman EXE) had a game that was never released stateside (and the others had large parts lopped out), and no one has translated them even six years later. So, I started looking into what it would take. Now, I’m just learning Japanese because it’s fun. =)
Mostly newcomer here myself, but welcome to the crowd!
Z-manNovember 12, 2011 at 12:05 pm #20774Thanks Z-man.
Speaking of games did you pick your handle based on the board game company? Or is that just a coincidence?
November 14, 2011 at 8:31 am #20816Must be a coincidence. My name’s Zachary. Or, ザカリー if you want katakana. =)
What games in particular are you interested in? Some of my favorites are
The Rockman EXE series (as I already said)
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy 1-6
Chrono Trigger
Soul Blazer
Super Mario RPG
well… actually… just name about any RPG for the SNES and you’ve got me. =PNovember 15, 2011 at 4:53 pm #20863I didn’t have any money when the SNES was big, so I missed out on most of the games that came out for it.
Generally speaking I’m looking for creative game experiences these days. Many games we see are carbon copies of previous works, so we end up with little innovation. Japan has its share of that problem, but they also have a lot more new and interesting game experiences. At the very least they have stuff that has never made it to the US.
Lately I’ve been playing most of my RPGs on the DS. Have you tried Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor? It’s one of the most interesting RPGs I’ve played in a long time.
While I was in Japan I picked up both of the Spice & Wolf RPG DS games. I probably won’t be able to play them for some time, but that’s definitely something I don’t expect them to release in the US.
