I’ve been using TextFUGU for quite a while now ( at least a year ) and have recently decided to start fresh from the begining, and re-study past chapters up to where I left off. I honestly just felt like I wasn’t making the progress I felt I should, and I continued to randomly forget some of what I learned when studying through Anki ( Seriously how many じょ kanji are there? 0_O ).
So here’s to my introduction! The name is Matt, and ever since I was younger I’ve always been facinated with Japanese and the culture behind it. I have a soft spot for Japanese movies based in ancient times with all the Samurai, Shoguns, Ninjas, you name it. Also love old school ( and some new ) Video Games, I could spend a whole day re-playing games on the SNES. I figure a good reason to stick with learning Japanese asides from the obvious reasons would be that it would look good on my resume, especially if I get into the computer/I.T. field like I plan.
Anyways, hello fellow TextFUGU-ers ! :)

Two hundred and thirty-four, apparently, though that’s almost certainly catching kanji with じょう as well. That’s nothing, though – しょう has five hundred and twelve. Mind you, if you limit the search to only the joyo kanji, those numbers drop to thirty-four and eighty-one, respectively. =P

Wow, that’s very interesting, but also midly depressing. :P
November 13, 2014 at 12:06 pm #46820Well, luckily it gets a bit better – if you apply the 80-20 rule. It’s a rough rule of thumb in practically everything which basically says “80% of the occurrences come from 20% of the causes” and it actually works out fairly well so far as the joyo kanji goes – which is to say, 20% of the joyo kanji comprise about 80% of what you’re going to see out in the wild.
Using that, those figures drop to 6.8 and 16.2 =D
In any case, you’ll start to get a feel for them before too long.
November 13, 2014 at 3:14 pm #46821Yea, I’m hoping if I go back and refresh on everything I’ll stop messing up with those jo/jou kanji. As where I was, I was constantly making mistakes on them and would have about 8 different jo/jou kanji daily in my Anki study list. =/
