Thought I would say high to the forums as I feel like telling someone at least that I’m learning Japanese ^^ As I’ve come to learn Hiragana and Katakana I have realized that it feels like one big memory game where you have the remember the different shapes and what they mean =D Yes this is random but it is making my learning experience actually really entertaining ^^

    Welcome!

In all fairness, the English alphabet is exactly the same, except you’ve been using it for so long that your recall of what each letter means is essentially automatic. With enough practice, Japanese will be just as easy for your to read.

Quite a weird thought to be honest. Knowing that these symbols that we see everyday cannot be understood by others o.o

It all comes down to perspective! We all feel that way to a certain degree about the people around us, don’t we? (Ha)

As someone who is not surrounded by Japanese culture, I agree that it’s interesting knowing something unfamiliar to the people around me. But keep up with your studies, and like Joel said–what’s exotic and new will become common and familiar. Best of luck getting there someday!

Ah yes, perspective. A friend of mine once commented to me that he preferred anime to Western shows because it’s not as clichéd. I replied to him that anime is just as clichéd – they’re just different clichés, so we simply don’t recognise them – and then went on to prove it by exactly predicting the end of a 26-episode anime series after having watched just the first two episodes.
