Hello! My name is Christina. I live in Atlanta, Georgia (US) working as an artist for a children’s clothing company (yes that is a profession lol).  I have been learning Japanese on and off (self taught) for years but a combination of being intimidated by kanji and a lack of a practice partner has gotten me off track. I’m probably hovering around in beginner-land, though I do know basic grammar and katakana/hiragana! Anyway, I’m all fired up again for a few reasons!

I want to learn Japanese because I really really love Japanese games for their innovative gameplay, lighthearted subject matter (without sacrificing gameplay), deep customization, and wonderful storylines but many of them never get translated. I’m super passionate about games so I know I can stick with it! Also, my cousin is fluent in Japanese and has lived there for many years. He’s recently reached out to me again and has invited me to travel with him to all his favorite places! I think it’d be wonderful if we could speak Japanese together as a way of reconnecting! He even sent me a manga to get started!

I think that the community on this site will be awesome, and actually being able to learn what radicals are will help me overcome my fear of kanji (along with my cousin to keep me motivated of course!). I feel like I can really do it this time!

Hey Christina! Welcome to the forums too! :)

I don’t know much about games really, but I happened to be on YouTube the other day looking at some Studio Ghibli stuff and found this “behind the scenes” vid. I guess they made (maybe their first?) game a few years ago. Their movies are obviously great for animation, so I thought you’d be interested in this video about this game they collaborated on, if you haven’t seen it yet. :) Cheers!

P.S. I definitely hope you decide to go to Japan soon! I’d want to learn some language, but probably won’t be fluent before I go, and that’s ok! :) I think you’ll definitely learn it this time around! Good luck!!

Ah! I totally love this game and I love behind the scenes stuff too! Thanks so much for linking me, I think I’ll watch them all! There’s actually a handheld version of the game that comes with the spellbook! I want it so I can feel like a wizard lol

Actually, I’m realizing I know a lot more Japanese than I previously thought. I’m on lessons 5-7 in grammar, but I didn’t know any kanji and I need to brush up on vocab. It’s a great way to review so far… maybe my goals aren’t as far off as I thought? lol I will definitely be going to Japan at some point though!
