My name is Fábio and I’m from Portugal!
I’ve been interested in learning Japanese for a long time (ever since falling in love with the culture, music, cinema and overall Japanese arts). I looked directed at the language and it stared right back at me shouting “I CHALLENGE YOU!” (OBS: This might be a lie) and I accepted the challenge!
I’ve been reading a lot on Japanese for the past few years and know the basics of basics, which I’ve learned from other sites and other textbooks. Then I found Textfugu (around a year and a half ago?). The thing is, I was very busy at the time, busy enough to read the first chapter (where Koichi warned me about “being busy is not an excuse”) and realize I really wouldn’t have enough time to drown myself in studying a new language – I had a full-time job, some freelancing projects, night classes and my father was ill (he’s OK now, though! :)). I decided to register anyway. Maybe having paid for it, I would kinda ‘force’ myself into studying it in that small ammount of free time I would get on weekends. Let’s just say it didn’t work out. But hey, by that time I had a life account, so I decided I’d just pick it up again when the time was right and when I actually had the time. And now here I am.
I am learning Japanese for various reasons, including: I want to experience living in Japan – even if for just a small period of my life, I love the culture and would like my visits to Japan to be more rewarding, having another language on your resume is always awesome (working in video games, video and music, Japanese is very good to know, since many people appreciate their take on these), the challenge! And I’m not gonna lie: to play games that were never translated to other languages and watch unsubbed Japanese cinema.
So yeah, there are a lot of reasons. I also have a weak spot for asian ladies. I’m going too far now, right? /creep
JK I’m not a creep :D
So, these past few months I’ve been running over my life and GETTING time to study Japanese. And now I’m here. Finally read to start – from the beginning to the end. And from what I’ve seen in this forum, I’m going on this trip with some pretty cool and nice people so, hey! Nice to meet you all!
With that, I end my TL;DR introduction.
Other stuff I’m using to aid my learning:
- iStart Mirai Languages Japanese (iPhone App w/ Lessons)
- WordUP Japanese (iPhone App – Japanese-English Dictionary + Survival Phrases + Flashcards)
- Various Kana/Kanji flashcards (also iPhone apps – iPhone is handy!)
- Some books I’ve bought.
- Livemocha.comBut yeah, this site will probably be my main reference for studying, the rest is support! If anyone would like to recommend me other supporting sites / apps, it’d be cool :)
Cheers everyone!

December 17, 2011 at 11:05 pm #22636Hi Fábio and welcome!
I personally can’t recommend any other resources since I’m using many of the same ones lol. And yes the iPhone is super handy, especially for studying the kana on my downtime. There are lots of others here who are far more experienced than me, and everyone is very helpful so don’t be afraid to ask for help if you have a question!
Best of luck with your studies and nice to meet you too! :)
(P.S. Glad to hear your dad is in good health now) :D
December 17, 2011 at 11:30 pm #22643Hi Fábio!
Welcome to TextFugu. :) I use most of the same resources you do, but I would recommend JapanesePod101 as another great website. I use it every single day. It’s well worth the cost of a membership because the PDFs on the newer lessons contain tons of information – grammar tips and explanations, kanji, vocabulary, and sample sentences for each lesson.
Welcome and good luck with your studies!
CassandraDecember 18, 2011 at 8:41 am #22649Hi @Carlie & @winterpromise31 thank you for the warm welcomes! :)
Yeah, I’ve been registered with JapanesePod101 for a while now (not paid), sometimes I do get some pretty interesting articles on the e-mail, maybe it will be worth to subscribe at a later time.
I also found some pretty cool videos that I’m watching. You can find ‘em by searching for “Let’s Learn Japanese Basic” on YouTube. They’re from a pretty old TV Series that taught Japanese. They focus too much on romaji (at least for now) but I’ve gathered loads of new vocabulary and phrases through it. But yeah, not as good as fugu :)
Also found Anki is available on iPhone… but whole cr… it’s expensive as hell.
Well, back to learning! Thanks again for the welcome :D
