    Hello!

I’ve just signed up and am about to start Season 2 of Textfugu… I’m very excited!

I am currently living in small town in England, but my goal is to get on to the JET Programme next year (fingers crossed!), which is obviously one of my main reasons for wanting to learn Japanese. My interest, however, stems from an arts and culture background – I studied fine art at university and discovered Japan that way (more from contemporary art and photography rather than manga). My curiosity has kind of snowballed since then!

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to getting better and better at speaking Japanese, and talking to some like-minded people! I suspect you might see me on the forums quite a bit in the future…

    Amy

Glad to have you aboard! I wish you luck with your studies and getting into the JET programme. It is very nice to have people with similiar interests to talk to thats for sure. I live in a small town in the US and most people don’t have a clue about anything Japanese, so I know where your coming from.

Hi Amy, and good luck. The UK needs more small town Japanese learners.

Astral, what part of the UK are you from?

Stroud, Gloucestershire. Not tiny, not huge, but my nearest Japanese language group is over an hours drive away in Bristol, and no one in the Budo Taijutsu or Aikido classes I attend speak Japanese either.

    How about you guys?

Woah, Astralfox… I work in Stroud! But I live in Gloucester. Small world, eh? I try to attend the Bristol Japan Club but you’re right, it’s pretty hard to get to on a regular basis.

    Hi Amy,

It’s cool to hear your interest stems from the arts. There is nothing wrong with it coming from manga, anime or games, but it is cool to see what other things inspire people to start learning a new language. I to have very few people to work with on learning Japanese. I remember I asked if anyone knew any Japanese in my Kendo class, but none of them had seriously tried to learn the language.

Being in Kendo really sparked my interests. I wanted to know what we were yelling during warms ups and matches! Haha.

Anyway welcome to the site. I think it is a great collection of knowledge and like mined users who all like to help.

Hi ukeath! Thanks for the welcome.

What I said about anime/manga wasn’t a criticism of people who do have interests in those things, I just wanted to differentiate as the contemporary art/photography scene in Japan is quite different, and I didn’t want to confuse the two (I don’t know a great deal about manga!).

I know where you are coming from with the lack of fellow-Japanese learners/speakers. At least there’s always places like this to help us out.
