Hi everyone, and of course, 明けましておめでとうございます。

I’m Ewan, I currently live and work in London. I’ve been interested in Japan for quite some time, at first through watching anime since about age 10. I don’t actually do much of that anymore (though there are a few manga titles I still read) and my interest in Japan has broadened out somewhat.

I’ve made attempts at learning Japanese from books etc. on and off for many years and only got so far, but now that I work for a company that has international clients and partners, it’s spurred me on to get serious about learning it properly. We have a lot of foreign-language speakers in the office, but no Japanese speakers, so learning would be a real advantage. My main goal would be to be able to proof-read text, and potentially to speak to and email work contacts, though I’d also love to be able to talk more socially to Japanese people and visit there one day.

When I first started, the internet wasn’t as great as it is now and book resources were limited and expensive, but now we have all these excellent things like Podcasts and websites like this one which make it so much easier to actually get started (always the hardest part). I’ve recently got myself a much better phone as well so I can use various apps to learn on the go. Learnt loads already!

初めまして David. How long have you been learning Japanese for? Are you learning for any particular purpose?

I’m at a weird stage at the moment where I know bits and pieces but there are gaps even at the early stages, so I’m working my way from the beginning. Fortunately I learnt ひらがな and カタカナ a long time ago so I don’t have to deal with that barrier. I have a little bit of 漢字 knowledge as well, which is kind of helpful (I’ve signed up to WaniKani to continue with that but I’ve also got a couple of good books on the subject).

I’ve been studying for nearly 3 years now I guess! Not consistently, but I’ve been getting more into it recently.

I lived in Chiba for 1 year while I was teaching English and really enjoyed the little bit I learned.

I’m focusing on reading/listening comprehension at the minute as that’s the easiest to do as self-study.
I would like to go back and to be able to have decent conversations.

Which area of London are you in?

Besides Textfugu and standard textbooks I use lang-8 and memrise.

I’m Southeast, not far from East Dulwich.

Yeh at the moment I’m mainly focused on reading/listening because that’s easiest as you say. There aren’t many opportunities for conversation practice when you live here, but I’ll look into that when I feel like I’m at a suitable level.

I might have to sign up to Lang-8 at some point. At the moment I’m using a mix of TextFugu and the JapanesePod101.com website. I’ll read up on individual points from other sources as they come up for more clarification.

    I’m north east, Walthamstow area.

Yeh, Lang8 is good, Iv usually try to write some examples of vocab or grammar in sentences and people offer helpful corrections.

There’s a weekly meetup in the centre where you meet people interested in language exchange. https://www.facebook.com/groups/217705541745299/?fref=ts It can be fun to go along.
