    Hi there,

My name is Lena. I am completing my task of introducing myself on the textfugu forum! Here are my reasons for wanting to learn Japanese:

    1. I’m traveling there in March for two weeks, knowing some of the language may be helpful (I hope)

    2. As a student who studies art history I find language profoundly interesting. My overall goal is to one day be able to speak a few languages with some proficiency. This would help me with my studies, especially if I decide to go abroad.

    3. The beginning stages of learning a language (before it gets really hard) puts me on a high I have a difficult time explaining.

    4. Because my boyfriend and I may want to live in Japan one day.

Those may be all the wrong reasons, or some good reasons, but time will tell. Hopefully I’ll be able to persevere.

I thought I would also add what might deter me:

    1. I’m taking 17 credits this semester. Yikes. Time is an issue, but it’s not an issue.

    2. General burnout

    3. Japanese looks difficult and overwhelming (which, interestingly enough, is what attracts me to learning the language to begin with).

As for reason number one, I’m looking forward to studying something which does not carry the pressure of a grade, credits earned, or anything like that. I’ve been trying to invest myself in activities like that (like running, for example)-a way to be more self disciplined, using intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic. Yes. So there are my “pitfalls.”

What part of Pittsburgh are you from/in?  I’m currently living in Shadyside.  Good luck with your studies!
