Ah, that sounds right. I actually thought of something similar to “what are you looking for?” but I wasn’t sure if that was a very common or “official” (for lack of a better term) in Japanese stores. I remember “いらっしゃいませ” from prior experience (the staff at my favourite restaurant say it to all their Japanese speaking customers).

how would you say “do you have a menu in English” in Japanese, though i can read hiragana and some katakana my mother who is going to japan with me can’t speak or read a word of Japanese so I would like to be able to ask for an English menu for her please help we leave very soon :)

That said, if you look obviously Caucasian and they actually have an English menu, chances are they’d probably bring it out to you anyway. Also, THEY might not be able to read the English menu – as I discovered at one place in Koyasan, where much hilarity was had by all. Basically, be prepared to order from pictures, or else find something reasonably-priced, then point and hope. Adds a bit of adventure to the meal. It never let me down, save for the one time when I was trying to order off the takeaway menu.
メニュー what is that part in either Hirigana or Romaji…. not so good at katakana yet LOL and I have been to Japan before…. last time I went i only knew how to say a few phrases… so you should of seen me try and order back then! that was horrible XD most of the time i ate bento boxes or in places that had the electronic menus that you can switch to English to order and a lot of sandwiches from the 7-11 by my hotel XD
You should really just use http://jisho.org/ for such things, look it up yourself in a katakana chart or figure it out in another way. You can’t expect people to do everything for you.

and another thing, I never said I expected people to do everything for me, I was asking for help so I would know in the future what it meant, I thought that was what Textfugu forums where about, a place that people could seek help.
Exactly. You asked something so simple that even someone who has never studied Japanese could figure it out. I think that if you can figure it out yourself, then you shouldn’t ask.

It takes less time for me than typing it out in hiragana or romaji for you.No no no, don’t start this again! :P The last time ゼロス was on the forum, she quit in a rage when people didn’t like that she kept rejecting their advice (and was just being a pain to help in general). As much as “You can’t expect people to do everything for you” is a fair statement, it’s kinda inflammatory as well, so it might have been best to leave it out. To be polite, you know?
And ゼロス, when someone gives you advice (albeit in a passive-aggressive way), say thanks and accept it. If they’re being an ass about it, don’t rise to it with “I asked one simple thing geeze” – say “Sorry, I didn’t think about doing that. I’ll try it now, thanks.”. Try and be more polite to helpful strangers in Japan, ok? ;)
TextFugu forum is a place to seek help ONLY if you’re willing to accept the help you’re given.
Also, I have to agree with Mark on this one: it’d be faster to look up a dictionary. But I’m assuming you’ve defiantly decided to not look it up, so I’ll just tell you メニュー == めにゅう (no romaji, because it’s the devil hehe).
The point that I was trying to make was he had no right to be rude to me no matter what he thinks, if he wanted to suggest me go to that site and said it in a polite way then I would have said thank you and not said anymore about it.
If anything you two are the ones who need to learn to be more polite to strangers/people considering he was rude and now you are just insulting me for asking for help, I am only trying to defend myself.
You Patronize me by saying “I’m assuming you’ve defiantly decided to not look it up” You know NOTHING about me, I had already looked it up long before the first reply ever came, i had started looking before I posted but had a bit of trouble finding it so I posted to ask before I continued looking so I would have another way of getting the answer in case I couldn’t find it for some reason.
I have been to Japan before and I have no issues with them because they are kind and respectful so we have no arguments what so ever.
…. Wow, Mark. Did someone get up on the wrong side of bed this morning? Yeah, asking us for a transliteration of the katakana was kinda the lazy option, but I don’t think that kind of vitriol is particularly warranted, and I’m very much hoping this isn’t one of those forums where it’s common…
If you see anything on the forums that you disagree with or want to correct, do so in a courteous manner. Being abrasive about it won’t help anything, and ignoring it is probably your best option. Arguing on the forums isn’t likely to get you anywhere.
I think any further discussion will just incite things more, so
any more replies on this matter will be deleted. I wanna make sure I wrote this right… so I thought I would check with you guys 私の日本語は下手です。 would be “my Japanese is poor” right?
Aced it. You could also say 私は日本語が下手です。 Which would be closer to “I am poor at Japanese.”
