It is. Going straight forward into native material without knowing is in itself counter productive just because you wouldn’t understand anything. You can definitely learn from context but thinking in the position of the asker, there is basically no material that he/she can learn from context out of unless he/she buys some sort of textbook and I don’t want our friend here to spend that much money when everything can be done with whatever is just offered on the internet. というか、we can assume our friend can’t even learn from context YET.
This is where I say, you might as well pick and choose any native material that suits your interest, and learn vocab from that because either way there is no way of understanding which is why I believe time must be taken to learn vocab. Even if you don’t understand, this kind of vocab building increases and serves as a basis of understanding. When I mean looking up words, not only look them up, but really plug it into Anki and review it. The returns do not seem apparent at first obviously because you just simply don’t know anything but comprehension increases greatly if you take the time to learn those words. Not only that but also exposure to native material helps too.
I guess at which point, does not become reading practice anymore but sheer vocab building.
