I took Japanese for about a month and then quit about a year back. I knew almost all of season one but I didn’t want to rush through it. So I slowed myself down and went on at a lesson a week or so, but it seems boring this way; I don’t feel like I’m learning anything, and I want to learn new things.
The only problem with going fast is not being able to memorize the onyomi and the kunyomi of kanji. There is also the “problem” of going to fast on the later seasons, and going too fast for the seasons to catch up on.
So how quickly should I finish the seasons, and what other resources do you recommend other than Textfugu? I already have Anki, and I’m thinking of doing the Core Xk when I’m finished with the seasons.
June 1, 2011 at 11:33 am #11797every season is a bit more challenging or has more information to learn. so i think as you go up in seasons you need to spend more time on them. season one i finished in 3 weeks. but you can take more time if need be or even less, though i don’t recommend less than that. then for the other seasons spend more time but i believe it should take about a month for each season.
hope this helps,June 1, 2011 at 2:49 pm #11811This probably doesn’t sound very helpful but… you should just go at the speed you want. Feel like you’re going too slow? Speed up. Too fast? Slow down. If you find there is something you aren’t quite getting or you have forgotten, you can always go back to it, it’s not gonna go away and leave you.
Resources other than TextFugu – Tofugu: 100 Best Japanese Learning Resources
Et voila! :PAs for CoreXK, just wait until you’ve finished all the Seasons – there is plenty of vocab to be learned in TextFugu already (especially these “Ultimate Vocab” lists I’m working through right now) and I think doing both at the same time would be too much, but that’s just me.
If you DO catch up with TextFugu (which you shouldn’t since he is working faster now that he has an employee), check out James Heisig’s Remembering the Kanji – I’ve already explained why it’s awesome in several other RTK threads, so go check there :P
June 1, 2011 at 3:55 pm #11821Look, in my opinion – go at a pace that feels comfortable.
Don’t rush yourself but don’t slack off either.
Everybody works at different speeds, there’s no need to feel pressured.Basically, what Mister said.

“Yeah, what Mister said, pretty much.”
“I agree with Mister.”I feel so special :3
Edit: Not meaning to sound arrogant, but it’s just that I’ve seen a number of posts here recently saying stuff like that hehe

June 7, 2011 at 8:37 am #12201Finish it at your own pace, absorb the knowlegde, and you will know when you are done. Just watch out for Rodan, he may not let you cross over to season two so easily.
October 31, 2011 at 9:08 pm #20255As everyone says going at your own pace is the best. But I understand how you feel, I have a pretty busy-bee schedule. My problem is I’m trying not to overwhelm myself and am going slow because I really want to have things memorized before I finish season 1 but I’m worried that because I’m going a bit slower then most I don’t want to get bored or run out of things to do in the time I do have for studying. So I need to plan my study times to be filled and no down time and they have to be fun! Otherwise a.d.d. kicks in and I see other shiny things to look at.
