I feel like I am almost at the top of the hill and soon will start cruising down the other side. I have tried many different resources out there to study Japanese but nothing really stuck (hey, I bet a lot of people go through that. right?). Once I started Textfugu, somehow everything started to stick! The particles have always been tough for me but for some reason Textfugu has made it easy to learn and understand! I am about to finish Season 3 and I was wondering for those of you who have gone through all of the seasons, which lesson did you feel comfortable using Japanese in every day life? I thought I studied just enough to get by when I went to Japan for a month a year ago but really I was prepared and had a deer in the headlights kind of experience. I am going back to Japan next week and I am feeling really good and I am cramming as much as I can before I leave so I was curious, when did you think you felt good enough to get by in every day life (going to stores, ordering food, asking questions, ect). If you could possibly put a season # on it, which season would it be?

I understand this question can be answered differently by each person but I was just curious on what everyone thought?

First time post, Thanks for your time everyone !!

Whoa, next week? Lucky. Where are you going?

I feel confident about using Japanese in public… until it comes time to actually use it. When I’m actually standing in front of someone trying to speak in Japanese, all of my knowledge suddenly runs away and hides. Plus, my listening ability still sucks…

Please don’t tell me that Joel… You are my hero on this forum…

I am half way through Season 4 and have to agree that Textfugu made me stick with it, and not just that, encouraged me to study more than I normally should or would be interested to.

I ordered Genki the other day, and realised even more, that if I started with that textbook, I would probably give up. But, having Genki as supplement for Textfugu is amazing.

Seriously, I am surprised that Textfugu is not available as a printed textbook (きょうかしょ :-)) by now.

Now going back to my いーadjectives :-(

I just got back from Japan and I will admit that it was a success! Though my vocabulary is bigger than what I have learned here because I studied using other resources first, I did MOST of my studying here at TF! I love this site and how we are taught here, it really has worked well for me and putting it into practice for ten straight days was very rewarding! I do know that I need a lot more studying under my belt in order to have full conversations and what not but I was able to speak pretty well and what not while I was there! I just wanted to share my experience so others can be motivated too! :)

    Congrats!

Ironically, Tofugu just recently released a podcast about using a holiday to Japan to study Japanese. =)

Did you take any pictures to show off? =P

    Shawn,

Have you finished all Seasons yet? I am midway through the Season 5 at the moment and hoping I would be able to communicate a little bit when I go over there at the end of the month.

    Thanks…

I actually only finished season 3. I have studied using other means prior to this and it was my second time to Japan but really, if you are at season 5 or through it then you will be just fine. Don’t be afraid to speak while you are there, even if you mess up, usually they will attempt to fill in the blanks or help out!

Yes i did take pictures! I am still uploading pictures but I have some from this trip up on my instagram and pictures from when I was there last summer as well. https://www.instagram.com/s.primrose/

    Pictures! Love pictures. =D

My first (and so far only) trip to Japan was before I even started learning Japanese – all I had was a phrasebook I picked up second-hand, some half-remembered phrases from anime, and charades, and I managed just fine. And as a point in favour of “don’t be afraid to speak”, I wasted 10,000 yen on a taxi on the first night because I thought I’d missed the last train, and didn’t have the courage to ask a station attendant about it.
