The new intro made me laugh internally.
I’ve taken a couple Japanese classes, and at the beginning it’s always standing room only. But, by the end, without fail you’re teetering on 10+ students.
Japanese is hard. I picked it up after about 4 years after I forgot about it. Originally I started liking Japanese for the same reason as most kids do. Japanese animation at the time was cool, the plots were more intriguing, and it seemed more intense. I’m an 80′s kid who went to an art college, where even my Professors admitted we were bombarded with Hanna Barbara style recycled animation. In Japan it totally was recycled animation, but for a 12 year old the plots were completely different.
Enough of history. Today, I picked Japanese as the language I wanted to learn, because 1, I had previous interest, and 2 BECAUSE it was hard. I’ve been studying now for about 3 years now, and I think I’m at a pathetic level of communication… but, I still study vocabulary everyday.
Take advantage of the community you find here. There are a lot of really nice, really smart, and really dumb people who have made all the mistakes ahead of you. They can point you in the right direction.
September 29, 2011 at 10:15 pm #18353I’m rereading the introduction chapter now. The “Preventing Failure” page has some… interesting things to say:
“TextFugu’s made for self-learners, after all, and if it didn’t help with things like “staying motivated” and “keeping with it” it wouldn’t be a very good textbook for self-learners at all. So, of course, it doesn’t cover these things.”
Either that “doesn’t” should be a “does”, or TextFugu is kind of a jerk.

October 1, 2011 at 12:48 am #18539“Do you like shortcuts? Then TextFugu probably isn’t for you. TextFugu is an online Japanese textbook that thinks long term. It won’t be easy, but we’ll do everything we can to get you there.”
This was the reference I was making, should have been more clear. It’s a tough position to be in where you say “hey, I’m a serious business, if you’re here to clown around, the service I provide is not for you.”
The community college I went to didn’t say that, while 80% of the students fail each semester.
