I didn’t want to admit it before myself, but over the past few days I came to a realization that I’ll have to give up on learning Japanese, at least for now, if I don’t want to screw school up completely.
It’s not just a matter of not having time, if it were just that it wouldn’t be a problem. I’m simply so mentally drained after coming home from school, I don’t have the energy left to devote to learning this language. Even if it’s no more than 30 mins-1 hr a day. It’s either I do schoolwork or Japanese, not both. And obviously, I have to choose schoolwork.
So yeah, it was a wonderful journey – too bad it had to end prematurely.
November 19, 2011 at 11:26 am #20997NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
…don’t go.
…I can change.
Say you sleep 8 hours a day, eat for a couple more (being generous), and are at school for say 7 hours or so. That’s at least 7 spare hours in the day; surely you can fit half an hour in there somewhere :P Even if you spend a few hours studying after school, that’s still plenty of time. If that’s really impossible (because I probably don’t understand your situation fully), then *make* time: http://www.textfugu.com/season-3/finding-time/. A few months from now you’ll be thinking “man, I wish I kept doing Japanese”.
Don’t give up.

give upput a hold on learning Japanese, at least for now, if I don’t want to screw school up completely.Quitting is dumb.
November 19, 2011 at 11:28 am #20999Just wake up half an hour earlier and do it the first thing in the day?
Work it in to your daily routine? Change everything in to Japanese? Of course I am not in your situation, but as I see it there is always a way if you have the will.
Either way, sad that you have to stop, but of course school should be n1 priority :/
GLNovember 19, 2011 at 11:38 am #21000Also, once you go to university/college, you’ll look back on your time at school and think “Wish I had done more with all that free time I had; I thought school sucked but it was actually a piece of cake!” XD That’s how I’m feeling at the moment. The work was piss-easy back then, but I just spent so much time fannying about getting bugger-all done. I wish I had started learning Japanese back then, a few years ago; take the opportunity, man.
(That’s assuming by “school” you mean anything below university/college)
November 19, 2011 at 11:42 am #21001I wish I had start a few years a go before college, the 100days of playtime I had in WoW would have been more well spent learning Japanese, though it was actually through gaming I got involved with Japanese culture for the first time…

November 19, 2011 at 11:54 am #21004Guys, guys, it’s not that I don’t have enough time to spend on learning the language, but between school and homework I’m too tired to focus on it.
Spending half of your current life on something you absolutely loathe is very mentally taxing.
November 19, 2011 at 12:09 pm #21006Go earlier to bed
Have less time each day, but be able to spend the time studying since you aren’t tiredTake a nap after you get home
StudyThere is a way if you truly want to. Imagine all these hours spend going lost, wouldn’t that suck?
November 19, 2011 at 12:46 pm #21008Napping generally makes me feel even worse. Can try sleeping early, though I have horrendous problems with sleeping in general – I’m one of these people who’d be happy to go to sleep at 3-4 AM and get up past noon. Still, it’s more than just being tired from not sleeping enough/overwork. I’m exhausted in a way sleeping more won’t fix. I’m sick of learning/studying anything in general. Honestly, it’s hard to be concerned with anything if all you wanna do is curl into a ball and have everyone leave you alone. So the only way to get through will be doing the bare minimum others expect me to do.
I doubt I’d be able to drop Japanese completely, though, I’d at the very least keep reviewing what I have learned so far. I’ve been doing it for so long it’d feel weird to stop now.
November 19, 2011 at 12:56 pm #21009Keeping up with your reviews will make you not forgot, so that is totally worth it if you can overcome it. If you have worked enough Japanese in to your daily routine you should still be seeing it a lot :)
If you continue with your reviews I wouldn’t call it quitting :D You are just taking a short break, so you can get your daily reviews down to a low amount :)
Who knows, maybe once you reach 100 reviews daily you might find the time to do more studying :)November 19, 2011 at 1:07 pm #21010“Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.” – Marilyn Vos Savant
A little quote I found while doing a lesson, thought it was perfect here :D
November 19, 2011 at 7:49 pm #21015If you can’t do it, then you can’t do it.
Honestly, I think that he has the right idea. He’s prioritizing the things in his life and has the balls to announce it. There is nothing wrong in quitting and we all have things that we have quit before. I like it when people quit because they know what they want to do with themselves and not being all wishy washy about it. Quitting is not dumb, just unfortunate.
There’s no point in learning a language half heartedly. You might as well not learn the language at all.
But priorities aren’t set in stone. If Japanese is something that you live for, then you will come back to it. Doing it now is just not a good time.
If you’re gonna quit completely, go ahead.
At least, it was fun while it lasted right?

November 20, 2011 at 9:28 am #21035Interestingly, after reading your post, Missing, I started to have my doubts whether it’s really a right decision xD
I know I’m not gonna quit completely, it was never a question of whether I’m going to learn Japanese, only when.
Worst thing is, I didn’t do any Anki reviews the past week, not because of my decision, but because my computer has been acting up, and now I got like 500 reviews to do… It’s a bit discouraging. And my computer still isn’t fully fixed. Sigh. I feel like I’m wasting time.
Oh, also – I’m a girl. Just lettin’ you know :p

November 20, 2011 at 7:12 pm #21047Take a break and do what you have to do.
If you can find the time (and energy) to review what you already know, even if it’s just a little bit, then go for it so you won’t forget as much. I wish I had.
We’ll be here when you return.
November 21, 2011 at 7:37 am #21057I’m very sorry sir.
