Hi guys, today I have had some ideas (well, not my ideas,it’s kind of ideas stolen from other places :D ) for future improvements on TextFugu,& I think would be wise to put them here, who know, maybe can inspire you guys for future changes :) (& forgive my english, hope is enough to explain them in a clear way)
Ah,before that,I want to congratulate for the updates on this days,I was thinking that this place was already amazing, now is even better!! :D

We can put in this thread similar ideas,& brainstorming about, but please forgive me if there is another similar topic, want mean that I totally miss it :S

So,my self-toughted friend, don’t know if this happen to you too,but there are some periods that I am less motivated to study Japanese,a bit lazy maybe, even with all the effort from TextFugu to keep me motivated (I am an ultra lazy guy somethimes xD )
But I think that pretty much everyone like games,so mixing the study with the games I think is an efficient way to keep people motivated :D
To be clear,I am not talking about games that can distract you from study,my idea was something similar to the achievment system that you can find on the recent pc/console games, achievments are like medals right?! Gaining a medal trough hard study make you feel proud of yourself,so imagine this section of the site where each one of you have a chart of medals but they are all empty space,& you have to fill them obtaining medals trough study,to help you visualize what I want to say, look at this link http://hlstats.wantedgov.it/hlstats.php?mode=playerinfo&player=10125 Those are my Stats on an italian Team Fortress 2 server,(& yes,the avatar is a photo of me xD)if you scroll that page down, you can see that there are a lot of “black circles” but other circles have a medal on it,that are the achievment that I have earned trough play (& there are even a “Current rank” medal that change every time I earn new ranks by killing hundred of players :S ) :)
If you have played Final Fantasy 8 you probably remember about the Seeds exam,in that exam you have to anser correctly to all the question in order to gain your promotion,a thing like that on the site would be awesome,if you pass the TextFugu Exam you go up on rank, you receive a new “rank medal” & eventualy you unlock some achievments on your stats profile, like “10 kanji learned” “100 kanji learned” (but with a cool medal, not just text :D )
So if you feel totally lost & that day you say to yourself “naa, today I don’t want study…I want play :S” ,1 second later you think “mh…but play what?…well,I can go to unlock some achievment on TextFugu” & you are actually playing & studying :P

How did this sound? In my opinion could be a great improvment to keep videogames fans like me motivated (& probably even who don’t play videogames),but maybe I am blind by my passion (videogames) & I am the only one in the world that like achievments & stuff,so I am curious to ear opinions about :P

Read the Kanji has an XP system but I’ve never found myself wanting such a thing when I am trying to learn, if I want to play a game I finish up whatever I’m studying and then and go do that, then later on I’ll come back and resume studying. My main problem is forgetting to disable Steam/Raptr notifications, whenever I see a friend has loaded up Street Fighter IV I get the urge to head on myself.

    I meant this

but please forgive me if there is another similar topic, want mean that I totally miss it :S

Also this seems like a thread on how to improve your study habits rather than how to actually make Textfugu better.

I don’t think achievements would be a bad idea at all, but I think implementing a system like that would be too much work for what it’s worth. I mean, it would be alot of fairly complicated scripting (I think?) and I think there are more pressing matters to be taken care of first.

Yes,I totally agree with you ルイ,I also don’t know how much work this require…but at least,we can afford to dream about that without so much effort :P
I also agree that there are thing more important first, for that reason I use the word “future” on the topic title :P

Talking about achievment,I found that iKnow already use this system, unfortunatly his method to learn kanji trough repetition & brute memory is a bit scary for me,it don’t even give mnemonics so it’s tough :(

My dream would be the interface & achievment systeam of iKnow (with achievments, progress bar etc..) with the guided step by step method & teaching skills of Koichi :D
