Hey Textfugu! Technically not new to the site. I’m just finally starting to use it. Taking advice from Koichi and starting to “just f****** do it”. Starting with the kana and working my way out. Right now (as I am writing this) I have down about 25 hiragana. Still a bit overwhelming, but it will work out.

I wanted to start learning Japanese a while ago. It all started after I was big into anime/manga and the like. However, I’ve grown out of the “anime” phase. Japan’s culture kind of overtook that. My new reasons for learning are:

-Japanese just sounds beautiful to me.
-The culture is amazing and vast
-I’ve always wanted to be bi-lingual (or more)

It’s funny since I originally wanted to learn Korean (since I am Korean), but my interest just isn’t there. I guess I kinda feel like I’m shutting out my heritage? I don’t think I should feel weird about that though (even though I do a bit)

Anyway, I’m hoping Textfugu turns out to be great and I’m looking forward to this whole experience.

Really just plow through it (took me three days solid), after that it’s just downhill for a while. I just finished Katakana today (did it in one day!), and it really feels great to click on the next chapter button. After learning Hiragana new words and Kanji just seem to magically stick to my brain.

By the way, welcome aboard and good luck!!!

Thanks! The funny thing is that I haven’t even started Textfugu yet. I’ve been learning with a handy android program called Obenkyo. I found my key to learning is in learning through writing. I’ve also read that Japanese is best understood as a written language first then a vocal one second. The opposite of English. Still trying to grasp that. Anyway, thanks for the welcome!

Hello and welcome to TF :)

You should download an app called Hiragana Cards for Android. It will help alot as you’re still learning the kana.

If you don’t mind spending a few bucks either, RealKana made an app for a few dollars. Simple, but amazingly effective.

Edit: oh sorry, did see you used android, don’t know if RealKana is for android yet…

Nope, RealKana was one of my first ideas, but sadly wasn’t available. I’m currently using Omenkyo. It actually seems better than most other apps because it offers quizzes in 4 different ways of recognition. The best is the handwriting recognition practice. That was the key for me.

To be honest, I started this post without actually starting TextFugu. I just wanted to clarify my reasons for learning Japanese quick. What I wrote down for the first chapter is

“To eventually travel to Japan to possibly work and/or live. I would also like to possibly travel to study the language further. Also, to eventually be able to better help in efforts such as the 3/11 recovery and be able to connect with the Japanese people.”

I’m just hoping, as Koichi points out, that I stick with it and knowing my reasons helps me.

Hi KJ! Good luck on learning Hiragana. I would recommend you get some kind of whiteboard (dry erase board) to use at your house or study area or whatever. Just keep writing and writing and writing and you will get it. I have one in my home and it was invaluable for my learning of Hiragana and Katakana.

@Lost Gaijin Great minds must think alike! I’m already using a white board. I studied on phone (never thought I’d say that) and then review on the white board. Writing is great on the phone, but not that same as the real thing.
