Hey there! I’ve just joined Textfugu and am super excited to start!

I’m learning Japanese because I’m going to a college in Japanese soon and being able to speak and read Japanese will greatly influence my quality of life (hard to order Ramen without Japanese).

Well actually, many ramen restaurants have a vending machine by the door – you order at the restaurant by purchasing a ticket from the machine, and then handing that ticket to the server. The machines usually have little images of what you’re ordering (though, to be fair, most tend not to be all that visually distinct).

But welcome anyway! =) Where will you be studying?

APU, it’s an internationally focused school in Beepu, Oita, Japan.

I actually went and visited for a week to check out the college. While there I went to a really local place that didn’t have any English support or fancy vending machines. So I yelled out, “Excuses me! I don’t know any Japanese, just English” In Japanese (I practiced that specific phrase) and said “beef ramen” hoping it’ll work. It did but the experience was really awkward.

So that ramen comment was based on a personal experience. Haha.

I went to a place in Koya-san once (before I started learning Japanese) which had an English menu, but no member of the staff who could speak English (or read the menu), which meant I had to figure out which items on the Japanese menu corresponded to the items we wanted anyway. =)

Mind you, I can’t say I’ve often seen beef ramen – pork is more common. Thinking maybe I’ll have to give it a try sometime.
