I’m considering getting a android tablet or Ipad at some point. In regards to Textfugu, Wanikani, and other Japanese online websites and resources (especially Anki), is there any reason to choose one device over another?
Edit: Specified Android due to confusion

January 11, 2014 at 7:31 pm #43380Well the iPad is a tablet, do you mean an Android tablet over an iPad tablet? All in all I think the answer would be no, and the real question willbe how large of a screen do YOU prefer. I use my Nexus 7 a lot with, well, pretty much everything including Textfugu. The site is made well for virtually any device as I’ve also viewed it on my phone.
It all likely comes down to what size you’ll like more and it’s hard to answer that. I have huge hands yet I prefer my 7″ tablet over a 10″ becuase it’s just that much easier to have with me everywhere I go. But I know others who prefer the 10″, I also notice they don’t carry it around everywhere either though. If you’re big like me you can fit the 7″ tablet even in your pants pocket.
I hate fanboyism, I have nothing major against Apple either even though I’d likely never own one at this point. It should come down to which eco system and size you prefer. You can easily read up on reviews most of this, but the size should come from actually holding one in your hands for a bit, more easily done if you have a friend that owns one of these devices.
When it comes down to it, a tablet is essential in my opinion! There are many applications that have recognition software so you can draw out the Kanji, or kana and it will tell you if you have the stroke order wrong, or just outright wrong character. I also use Anki which syncs with anki web so I can use the flash cards from textfugu on my PC at home or work, plus on my tablet.

January 12, 2014 at 8:44 am #43444You should also take note of what else do you own; a tablet by itself or do you own other things to tie into an Eco system? Apple really shines when you have other Apple devices to ‘connect’ to (Apple TV, Airport, other iPads) but lacks the customization of an Android tablet. Apple holds resale value very well but they update the product line about once a year so your ‘current model’ will be ‘last gen’ next year.
That said, I use my iPad as a replacement computer. I write code, use photoshop, FTP/SSH into remote computers, surf the web, email, play games, FaceTime(Apple’s free video chat)/iMessage(Apple’s free text messaging)/Skype/VoIP, watch videos (both online and off), use Numbers/Pages/Keynote/iMovie, and just about every thing else with my iPad. We also have three other iPads, three other iPhones, Apple TVs, Mac’s, and we all make use of iCloud.
I started with an iPad because of the way it would play nice with my Mac (Windows and Mac didn’t get along too well back then). Now I have an Eco system around Apple and use the various ways they all communicate with each other, like airplay and air drop. For us it makes more sense to get an iPad over an Android tablet. If I was starting over it would still be Apple but only because I like the way the UI feels, not because it’s Apple. I have yet to see an Android phone system that a like, but that’s a different story!
January 12, 2014 at 6:57 pm #43455From the standpoint of obtaining reading material to practice with, is there a notable difference between the two? From what (limited) searching I’ve done over the past few days, I’ve come across a few instances of some ebooks and services being available for the Ipad but not android (due either to region locking or maybe just publisher preference). I’m unsure of how widespread this is.
It’s been suggested that I consider a kindle of some form or another (and getting a Japanese Amazon account linked to it). As far as non amazon / ebook matters are concerned, how would this work out? Would it still handle things like Anki or WaniKani?
…
If it affects anything, I’m not really planning on doing much else with the tablet than studying Japanese. I have a (Windows) PC that I use for most things, so I could understand getting an android to better sync up with it. At the same time, I don’t mind dealing with windows / apple issues if it means access to more reading materials.
