So I was perusing the app store the other day and I stumbled across a free Japanese dictionary called ‘Kotoba!’ the search functions it included seemed pretty nice (even included search by radical, which goes well with the way TextFugu is set up) and its completely internet free to boot (great for someone like me with a lack of data). I was wondering if anyone else wanted to check it out and tell me if its a good thing to have, if there’s a better one, etc…

I’ve been using Kotoba too. I’ve been told it has a couple of accuracy issues, especially when it comes to the example sentences, but it’ll be fine ninety-nine percent of the time. Plus, no better free alternative has been suggested to me.

Ah, Thanks. Good to know that there’s still respectable freeware out there.

Tofugu did a small review of it a while back – http://www.tofugu.com/japanese-resources/kotoba/

Oooh… I looked at the review section… Anki for ios looks especially tasty, but I really don’t think i could shell out $25 bucks for it. At that point I’d most likely go for a subscription at Gakuu.com ($20) or wait for WakiKani to happen ($?, anyone have a quote yet?). Or maybe I’m wrong, has anyone tried Anki for the I-pod yet?

The Anki app works well. I really recommend it if you take public transportation or often find yourself idle away from home (between classes at school, waiting room at the dentist, etc). It’s worth the price if you think of it as payment for the desktop and app versions.
