Forgive me if this has been covered already, couldn’t spot it anywhere!
Anyway, my best friend treated me to a two hour sushi lesson for my birthday… the chef (Makiko Matthews) was amazing, and I learnt so much! I thought it would be so difficult to make sushi of my own, but it really wasn’t that hard to do. Easy to pick up, but hard to master I’m sure. Produced some fairly professional results (though not as good as my friend, who won a huge bottle of sushi vinegar with her ridiculously even sized cucumber maki rolls) which tasted awesome.
Has anyone else tried their hand at sushi making? Do you cook any other Japanese dishes at home?
I’ve now been inspired to buy my own sushi making equipment/ingredients, as well as a Japanese cook book for some more homely dishes. What’s everyones favourite? ^^December 12, 2011 at 4:24 am #22396I’ve tried my hand at hayashi rice once, but since I could only find curry roux, it turned into some sort of hayashi-curry rice Frankenstein’s monster. It was pretty tasty, though – very full-flavoured. I’ve since managed to find hayashi roux, so I’ll try again someday. I want to try other things too, if I could find a good recipe book. Japanese Cuisine For Dummies sort of thing.
My favourite types of Japanese cuisine are far beyond my ability to make. =)
December 12, 2011 at 6:08 am #22397I’m going to take a look at some of Harumi Kurihara’s cookbooks, as I’ve heard good things about them. I’m quite interested in the more ‘homely’ food that Japanese people might eat on a day to day basis, as I’d like to incorporate some of it into what I cook at home. I’m getting quite bored with eating the same old thing just rotated through different days of the week!
Luckily living in London, and working right in the middle of the West End, I shouldn’t have too much trouble finding ingredients. The sushi chef even pointed us all in the direction of her fish supplier, who have a few shops dotted around a few miles from my house. Can’t wait to pay them a visit!December 12, 2011 at 6:51 am #22399I bought the “Just Bento Cookbook” by Makiko Ito and it is the best thing ever. I seriously make something from it every day. I want to get in to making hot pots soon so I hope I get the zojirushi electric skillet I want for Christmas. I made some Curry at home with this block of curry flavor from the Japanese section at Wal*Mart, it was pretty okay except that the cheap meat came out all chewy :X
Also this was my first try at some sushi at home : http://tinyurl.com/3daljgt – salmon and cucumber (the yellow things are nori tamagoyaki)
December 12, 2011 at 7:31 am #22401Oooh, those look really yummy!
This is the (rather wonky) sushi I made – http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lw3kc53nFX1qihiaio1_500.jpg
Can’t wait to make some more!I was looking at that bento cookbook yesterday on Amazon… it may be my next purchase as it looked really good! Would be nice to take my own Bento Boxes to work instead of having to eat the pre-packaged rubbish they serve us!
December 12, 2011 at 7:44 am #22402It has really steered my diet in a healthier direction, not to mention it saves me money I used to waste on junkfood. Plus all of the recipes in Just Bento are fairly quick and easy to execute, so I don’t have to worry about wasting a lot of time and energy on meals when I could be doing other things. It has definitely paid for itself many times over, and I only purchased it in October. I would definitely recommend it!
December 12, 2011 at 11:06 am #22407I have limited exposure to Japanese food but the last time didn’t end well, my friend bought a tray of sushi and she told me to try some, I got given some cucumber flavoured variant and I felt like I was going to be sick until I got rid of the sushi in a bin. I should stop telling people I’m a fussy eater because it seems to make people want to give me food all the time. >:[
I wish I wasn’t so fussy, but 99% of the time if I don’t think I’ll like something I’m right. Statistics never lie!
