Can anyone recommend any Japanese hip hop artists/albums?
May 25, 2012 at 2:42 pm #31149In terms of instrumental hip-hop, there’s of course Nujabes and DJ Krush. Both do a kind of chill, jazz-inspired hip-hop.
Over on the Reviewing the Kanji forums, there’s a very long thread with YouTube links. I haven’t had a chance to go through it all, but it seems interesting!
May 25, 2012 at 2:46 pm #31150Oh, I certainly can. ;)
I love Japanese Hip-hop, I have a whole playlist on my mobile, lol. Hip-hop seems to be fairly underground still in Japan, so it’s harder to find than Western artists. Collabs are really common, from what I’ve seen.
My favourite artists include: SEEDA, Ken the 390, Cherry Brown, MINT, SHINGO★西成, NORIKIYO, WAX, OZROSAURUS, Nitro Microphone Underground, BOMBRUSH, Microphone Pager, to name a few, lol.
YouTube is the best place to find them, sometimes uploaded by the artists themselves. Let me know and I can gladly provide some links. :)
May 25, 2012 at 2:51 pm #31151May 25, 2012 at 2:53 pm #31152Cheers guys! I’ve got an album by Krush and absolutely love the stuff Nujabes did for Samurai Champloo.
@gigatron – I got a sense of hip hop not being that big when I was in Japan, which surprised me, I thought it would be a bigger scene.
I don’t know any of those names, so at your discretion please provide me with links for your recommendations. Much appreciated!May 25, 2012 at 2:58 pm #31153I dunno, I get the sense that the hip-hop scene in Japan is pretty healthy, but I don’t really have a whole lot to base it off of. But there have been some pretty big names like Krush and Honda that have been around forever, a ton of international acts always stop by Japan while touring, and there’s a lot of international collaboration (just look at the Teriyaki Boyz’ debut album).
I’m just not really sure how to measure the size and health of a music scene. Obviously the US has a big hip-hop scene, but how do we know that?
May 25, 2012 at 3:01 pm #31154@ Hasji – ok, ok, I’m not getting into any epistemological discussions!

May 25, 2012 at 3:21 pm #31157If you are talking about japanese hip-hop, then its definitely gotta be
鬼

Anarchy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4_HwzxnG0IThese 2 are the only 2 that I personally feel is “actual” hip hop. Whatever that means :/
May 25, 2012 at 3:27 pm #31158@hashi – Ha! 10 years since I studied philosophy tells me I’m not in good shape for that contest.
I’m pretty knowledge music-scene-knowledge isn’t ‘A priori’ though!@missing – thanks! 鬼 seems good. I’m not sure I’d file AKB48 under hip hop though!
May 25, 2012 at 11:16 pm #31161When I think of Japanese Hip Hop I usually think of the Teriyaki Boyz. Someone said Nujabes who seems to be quite known.
Hashi did an article recently on Tofugu about Japanese Chicano rappers http://www.tofugu.com/2012/05/11/japanese-chicano-rappers/. Chech out the two songs in the article. I find it funny but the songs are pretty good too :D
May 25, 2012 at 11:55 pm #31163I agree with kanjiman, Teriyaki Boyz comes to mind. Also I’m surprised no one mentioned “m-flo” yet.
A few good m-flo tracks:

http://youtu.be/FQjdRPxgUM0I prefer m-flo if I listen to Japanese hip-hop at all, always seems to have this classic 80s/90s sound.
May 26, 2012 at 4:30 am #31165whoops forgot to add mflo too
May 26, 2012 at 9:20 am #31166Haha, I’ve got your back. I don’t really listen to hip-hop, so he’s the only one I know anyway :/
May 26, 2012 at 2:48 pm #31168@vanandrew: Sure thing, mate. Here’s a few links to some of the stuff I like. I have more so let me know and I’ll be glad to post. Also try the “related links” on the sides to these videos as they often lead to other really good songs (it’s how I originally found most of these).
