I have just recently signed up to do my service to our (America) country as a Cryptolinguist, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for ways to practice kanji in my down time (what little there will be at boot camp). I would be very happy to hear any answers that you all may have.
Currently, I do know ~2000+ kanji, sooooo… if there is a way to sit on that knowledge without losing all of it, I would really like to know. I’m going to be away from my practicing system for a little over a year (after I return from active).
Again, any reccomendations would be very much appreiciated.
Keep up the ‘lence.
STetsuo.December 16, 2011 at 10:59 am #22584I guess you did RTK1?
In that case just get yourself a smartphone and do reviews on it :)
December 16, 2011 at 10:57 pm #22610I know the Navy has many language learning resources for officers, I’d imagine there are some opportunities in the Army as well that aren’t just limited to classes (especially if you’re coming from a technical background). Aside from anything they can offer though, I’ll second the above– phone or other portable with apps and a decent screen (I use an iPod touch). My preferred method is a little more low tech though. Just write down a few kanji every morning on a post-it or something and keep it in your pocket. Take it out a couple times during the day and try using it a couple times. Then at the end of the day, see if you’re comfortable using them all. More difficult ones can be used again until they stick. It works best if you’re able to relate them to something you’re did or thought about during the day!
December 17, 2011 at 4:29 am #22612Okie doke, thanks for the advise. Nah, I never did RTK, I have it, I just don’t like the teaching method. D: Too slow.
I am joining enlisted, so I’ll probably try the smart phone thing for the first while and see if I like it.
December 19, 2011 at 8:44 am #22720You’re not going to have access to a smartphone while you’re in basic and definitely won’t have time to do anything other than push-ups and trying to stay awake. Best bet is to put it to the side and wait till you get through basic and AIT. You’ll have tons of downtime after you finish your training, but absolutely none during.

December 20, 2011 at 5:48 pm #22765Well initially I wanted to join the Navy, however due to some issues with my education I wasn’t applicable. I didn’t just jump into it, I have had a lot of time to think about where I want to go, and how to get there. The ARMY will help me with college, plus I can get paid to learn new and fascinating languages. So I’m pretty happy.
@Narc
Yeah, I know about that, I’m probably going to cram as much as possible until then. In between my daily work out sessions. So basically, I will be away from kanji for at least a minimum of nine weeks, probably fourteen. (From what I’ve heard from friends in the service.) -
