Every day before I start reading on and studying in TextFugu I review my Anki cards. Under the Kanji 2. 1 2 tab it will bring up the kanji for “person” and it says “reading” which I know has multiple meanings. either にん、じん。OR the kun’yomi reading which is ひと。

Why doesn’t Anki separate the decks into On’Yomi and Kun’Yomi? How am I supposed to know which reading it’s asking for? Is it bad to just study it with all three readings instead of it being separated into two decks(Kanji 2.1 2 & Kanji Vocabulary) Why does the “vocabulary” have the kun yomi reading and the kanji deck have the on yomi? it is so incredibly confusing. I was learning everything thus far with flying colors and have no problems with anything else. I can read and write Hiragana perfectly and I totally understand the basic nouns. I somewhat understand the radicals but not really sure why はち starts out as volcano and then turns into 8. i’m not getting that just yet. i went back and re-read everything koichi says about kanji before you being but im just not understanding. once it clicks, ill be good to go.

does anybody out there know how to help me.

    ありがとう ございます。

Even though there’s several readings for e.g. 人 the one in the kanji deck will be the one which is evaluated to be the most useful one. If you get. I don’t think of it as anki is asking for both じん and にん when 人 appears. I think if I just get one of them correct, I’ve answered correctly.
I don’t bother about it is the on’- or kun’yomi reading. I just accept the reading Koichi have chosen to be in the deck as that’s probably the most useful one.
    I hope this helped.

Kouichi’s given fairly arbitrary names to the radicals based more on what they look like than what they mean. They do have actual meanings in Japanese, but not all of the ones on Kouichi’s list are on the official lists. For example, the radical that Kouichi’s called “fish tail” is actually a variant of the 火 radical, which means “fire”.

Both the “fish legs” radical and the “volcano” radical are the same radical in Japanese, which means “away, out of, split, oppose”. 八 is a separate character in its own right that just happens to look similar. Basically, don’t let Kouichi’s radical names confuse you – they’re only there as an aid to memory. If the names aren’t working for you, come up with your own ones, or just ignore them altogether.

I’ve generally learnt the real meanings through exposure to various things, and it does help me. For example, it’s easy to remember, say, 意 as “stand on the sun on a heart”.
