I’ve become obsessed with this Japanese TV drama called Kaseifunomita (Mita the House Keeper). Has anyone been watching it? The show is in it’s first season here in Japan, (episode 7 to date). It’s supposedly the most popular show in the country right now. It’s a drama/mystery/thriller, sort of in the genre of Lost or Desperate Housewives.

The cast is amazing and the plot and story lines are well written. It’s about this family coping with the tragic death of their mother when the father hires a housekeeper from a maid service. Without giving too much away- this housekeeper (Mita-san) is friggin psycho! Like a robot, she carries out any order that’s asked of her while remaining completely emotionless. (You can image the types of orders the teenage son comes up with.) She even has a robotic, emotionless, monotone way of speaking- very creepy. Mita’s absolute mystery. But as the season goes on small pieces are revealed about her past. Meanwhile, all sorts of drama unfold with this family revolving around their mother’s death.

I found a site where you can watch full episodes for free with English subtitles. Give it a chance. Guarantee you’ll be hooked after the first couple episodes. And it’s great for learning Japanese – Mita-san’s robotic speech is super easy to understand. I’ve been dying to discuss the show in English!!

I just checked out the first episode you linked.

It looks interesting. Not quite like a drama i’ve watched before. the first episode was too damn sad. I don’t imagine they’re all like that, but it does well to set up the story and give the characters an identity so we can understand their struggle more easily.

all in all, i will definitely watch another and decide more conclusively then…

I’m watching the first episode now (at work… shhh) and it seems interesting so far. I’ve been meaning to check out some dorama for a while, as it would be much better for my Japanese than anime, I’m sure! I see what you mean about Mita-san’s speech… it’s very clear.

Do you have any more recommendations of good Japanese dramas scotto-san?

Glad you guys are liking it so far. It gets juicy around episode 3.

@ooh_a_robot I’ve heard the show “Antartica” is pretty good. Outside of Kaseifunomita on Wednesday nights, I haven’t been watching much TV since I’ve been here.

Yeah, just after watching the first episode, I called my friend and she said she had just been watching the same show! such a coincidence! she hadn’t told me about it before and she was about to tell me, but I could sense it, so I told her the same thing! lol
anyways, yeah, she really like it. she was just watching the latest episode, so I guess I have to check it out in full.
