Hey guys, Where do you/ how do you practice your Keigo. I just had a speaking test the other day and the scenario involved me using keigo. haha yep that didn’t go so well. I find it difficult to practice speaking formally with younger generations, and since I dont really have too many older japanese friends it makes it a little hard to practice.
So how do you guys practice your Keigo?
Cheers.
May 31, 2012 at 2:35 am #31293In my case, the only native speakers I have any sort of contact with are all several years older than me, so all I can do is use is formal speak with them. Indeed, my situation is basically the opposite of yours in that I don’t know any young native speakers and have no way to practise speaking informally. :P

AnonymousRight now I’m still learning Keigo, so I haven’t had the chance to use it much. I’ve been learning it at school, and actually I don’t think there are many rules to using Keigo. There are only a number of rules and set phrases, but to me it’s the different sentence structures to using Keigo compared to normal Japanese that is hard to get used to.
May 31, 2012 at 10:21 am #31303Sorry, I am self taught, and can’t see the need to learn anything aside from understanding it, so I haven’t decided to put any time in to training it. Therefor, I am of no help :/

May 31, 2012 at 5:53 pm #31307Use lang-8 and do video posts and/or Skype chats.
June 1, 2012 at 6:42 am #31326Yeah you could go on lang-8 and ask them if you can help with your keigo…
I haven’t got around to learning keigo yet, but it doesn’t sound very exciting lol.June 1, 2012 at 9:52 am #31339Haha it’s weird. I’ve been talking casually with Japanese friends for so long. My formal Japanese is probably pretty poor, or I need to take lots of 2nd guesses.
June 1, 2012 at 5:23 pm #31348I haven’t even started learning keigo. In class, aside from learning the giving and receiving verbs, we haven’t even begun to consider the really formal language.
Refresh my memory, though – teineigo is です/ます form, yes?
