Hey, just a quick introduction here :)

My name is Jamie (or Jay) and I live in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, ニュージーランド (New Zealand). So why am I learning Japanese? Because I want to be able to communicate with and understand people when I travel to Japan later this year. Also, eventually I would like incorporate Japanese into my career…

I first learned basic Japanese in school when I was 15/16. I travelled to Japan on a School trip in 1999 and had an amazing time. We visited Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo and stayed a week in Omihachiman with families. My host family were so good to me, I loved my time with them and I hope to catch up with them when I am back in Japan this year.

I am stoked to be able to return to Japan, I will be visiting Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Fujikawaguchiko and Tokyo this time round. My partner is coming with me, he has never been before so I can’t wait to show him around.

I stumbled across this site and love it so far! So much more straight-forward than other learning sites. I’m looking forward to learning heaps :)

Hey Bbvoncrumb, thanks man! Mighty Tron eh? :) How long you been studying 日本語 for?

Hey Joel! We head off on the 31st August for 11 days (wish it was longer)… I will be taking a mammoth amount of photos haha, I’m prolific with my camera! Will make sure to post up a blog when I get back :)

About 2.5 years now, finished text fugu a long time a go but come here to fk with people every now and then.

Last year I went to Japan in October, almost same time as you, FYI it’s hot as chit.

And yeah, give a blog a try, I at least would view it, always interested in others experiences.

I went late August to early September in 2010. We spent the whole time melting in the heat, only to discover when we got home that it was actually one of the worst heat waves in recorded history for Japan…

We kept a blog. http://japan.jrudd.org/ – it’s a little lacking in pictures, though, because I hadn’t figured out the non-tedious way or adding them to posts at the time. I’ve since made them into a digital scrapbook, the pages of which I’ve also uploaded to Facebook.

@ Bbvoncrumb – Sweet, I guess you must be pretty fluent by now then? Can I ask why you learnt Japanese? Yeah, when I first went over in 1999 we were there in September and it was extremely hot and muggy so I know what to expect. Just happened to be the only time we could get away from work. Will defo give a blog a shot :)

@ Joel – Man, tough luck hitting a heat wave like that! Hopefully we won’t have it too bad when we’re there… Awesome blog, thanks for letting me check it out! Good to see photos from some of the areas that we will be visiting :)

How did you update your blog while you were there? I want to be able to access the internet, but not too keen on paying Vodafone NZ’s hideously expensive roaming rates so I’m trying to figure out the best/most reliable way to get online.

We stayed in hotels with internet basically every night (and the one night we didn’t – halfway up Mount Fuji – I used my Kindle, which was still getting mobile reception).
