Hello fellow textfugu readers my name is Cory I am from the USA and I currently live in Japan, I work in the information technology sector for the government. Their is so many reasons as to why I want to learn Japanese first of course is because I live here and I would like to communicate with the fellow Japanese here second is being able to understand the anime, local rants and raves, and be able to watch and understand some of the cool television programing on the Japanese TV, third and not the last lol is to understand what is being said on the radio, also I am in hopes I can make more friends because since I have been here I have found it somewhat difficult to find friends here for reasons but enough of that my experiences here has been okay the food here is very delicious and I cannot get enough of it the locals here are pretty different as what I am used to but it is not too bad, well let me stop with my ramblings if you wanna know anything please ask away.

P.S. I have loved and enjoyed the Japanese culture forever :D

Your title might look better as “こんばんは!私「わたし」の名前「なまえ」はコーリー・スパークスです!” (You can choose hiragana or kanji, that’s up to you)

But, welcome to the community! I, myself, am also living in Japan and I’m always glad to meet others too. How long have you been in Japan and how did you get your job here? Were you transferred from a US branch etc.. ?

Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay.

As KiaiFighter commented on but didn’t really address, you’ve got a couple of lessons to learn before you can manage sentences in Japanese. =P

こんばんわ -> こんばんは – the は is the topic particle, which is pronounced わ.

おんあまえ -> なまえ – this one’s a double-whammy. =P Firstly, the IME has messed something up. You’ve gotta be pretty careful when typing Ns near な-line or あ-line characters that you don’t wind up with an ん where you weren’t expecting it (or no ん where you were). The word is おなまえ. The second issue here is that using おなまえ for your own name is way too polite – it makes you appear arrogant. You’re basically saying “My esteemed name is Cory”. If you’re requesting a stranger’s or social superior’s name, you’d use おなまえ, but you’d never use it for your own. Just なまえ is sufficient.

Sentence structure: you’ve got two topic particles. You’ll learn about this when you get to that lesson, but you only need one of them – わたしのなまえ is the topic, so it’s わたしのなまえこーリー

Kanji: Gonna disagree with Kiai on this one, don’t try to use kanji before you’re learnt it. Otherwise you risk saying completely the wrong thing. =D

Ok, I can’t seem to edit my post – think the server’s choking on something. Just wanted to add something for Kiai: you use parentheses rather than speech marks to delineate ruby text in Japanese. =P

Already some good lessons to start from both Kaifighter and Joel thank you both, MisterM I hope my sentence was not too bad and confusing.

Haha, it’s fine, I understand it; it just would look nicer with some more commas and full stops :P …or “periods” as non-British people might say…
