Dear Michael.
Put your money where your mouth is. やってみなよ。それは、日本語の授業をやってくれ。時間あるかどうかちっとも関係ネーから一週間は経った後で、見事に教えてくれ。ね、先生?楽しみにするよ!
>If someone was foolish enough to base all their Japanese studying on TextFugu and *only* TextFugu, I’d feel really sorry for them; they may as well just give up XD
>I’d say one lesson a week is reasonable, ESPECIALLY since they’re now onto the sorter “mini-lessons”. I know they take a while to write, but one a week seems decent figure for people actually trying to learn. Hell, if I have some free time, *I’ll* try writing a lesson, see how long it takes :P
そんなこと言ったら、授業はやばくなるぞ!頑張れ!
November 29, 2011 at 11:17 pm #21627>I usually come in and get all aggressive, then Koichi or Hashi come in and try to apologise, and then everyone’s all like “Oh hey, thanks, that’s fine, just sit and not update the site all day, put your feet up and play Starcraft, go ahead”
happening now as foreseen :P
November 29, 2011 at 11:27 pm #21628I’m sorry that my other post is in mostly in Japanese. I’ll try to translate it the best I can.
But before that, I have a good idea guys! Let’s blame our inabilities to learn ourselves on Koichi! It’s not like we’re self taught Japanese learners or anything!
November 29, 2011 at 11:56 pm #21629I’m pretty surprised at the negativity, it’s not like language lessons are something that can whipped up really quickly, then of course there’s the Anki decks which are pretty time consuming to make if you have to record sound for them too. Japanese isn’t even Koichi’s native language, it’s easy to look in from the outside and criticise, but could some of you pump out English lessons frequently (and run a decent website while making Anki decks & PDFs) on your own, really? Let alone doing it for a language you yourself are still getting better at. (correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Koichi makes frequent use of Lang-8)
It’s not like the Internet is short of resources to learn Japanese. I guess because I use multiple other sources a new lesson not showing up every week on here isn’t affecting me that much.
If it was 3-4 people working on the site, then yeah I’d be pretty concerned about the content, but it’s not, it’s a single person, who I shall say again for emphasis, is not a native Japanese speaker.

Nope but I am not claiming to be able to do so, and I am not taking money for it.

Updates Galore
Constant updates, changes, features, and more. There’s a lot on TextFugu right now, but there’s going to be more a year, month, or even day from now.
November 30, 2011 at 12:58 am #21632Seems mostly fine to me, as it says “more a year, month or even day” as it says “even day” it’s not saying it will be updated daily or anything just that hey tomorrow some new content could be on the site. So I take no issue with that part.
Although constant updates is a bit of a stretch. >:)

Yes, we *are* self teaching, and I *can* learn on my own just fine, but we *paid* for TextFugu’s help. It’s like buying a real life textbook with half the pages missing: yeah, the manufacturer says he’ll send the pages on as soon as possible, and you *can* use other stuff in the meantime, but then it kinda defeats the purpose of buying the book in the first place. By the time those pages arrive, you’ll have read all the material from other sources, and you’re left with a useless textbook and a hole in your wallet. If TextFugu’s beta stages were free, there’d be no right to complain whatsoever and I’d appreciate *any* content at all. But we’re paying customers, so it’s different.
I’m studying for exams at the moment, but at some point in the future if I have time, it could be quite fun to write my own lesson :) A couple of things to note though: 1.I’ve no experience of writing lessons 2. My standard of Japanese isn’t as high as Koichi’s. Don’t expect anything phenomenal, but I can still try my best :)
TextFugu was great for the very basics and the motivation to begin studying, but now I only stay for the forums. Once some conversation stuff gets put up, maybe it’ll become useful again though, because that’s an area I need practice in. Currently, there doesn’t seem to be $20 worth of updates each month.
November 30, 2011 at 9:47 am #21650You people are vicious.

So are you saying that TextFugu is “incomplete”? If anything, I think of it as a textbook that has magical appearing pages at random times. Are you disappointed in TextFugu? Did the free trials lead you to think it was more than what it is? I’m not sure what the big deal is here. I enjoy TextFugu, I am thankful for TextFugu and all of Koichi’s efforts to make this an easy and understandable learning process, and at the price of $20 a month it is more than worth it to me.
I don’t think it has ever claimed it should be anyones one and only resource nor that it is “intermediate”. Actually, the TextFugu Gakuu.com discount link says, “Textfugu teaches you the basics and how to learn Japanese most effectively. But you’ll also need to get used to more advanced material too. That’s where Gakuu comes in! We explain the trickier aspects of the language and culture by breaking down real stuff that Japanese people use themselves every day.” and “Gakuu gives you room to grow your Japanese and future-proof your learning. It’s the perfect partner to Textfugu!” ORLY….
I guess I just can’t wrap my head around someone providing a fun/ affordable source for learning something, but when it no longer meets your needs you don’t think its good enough? If this is how you feel, were ALL the lessons this way? Were you thinking this the entire time? Did you feel that every single lesson was lacking? Or just the later ones? What the heck guys! Koichi, don’t flex these punks!
I mean if it’s so easy…. why don’t you guys create a Japanese learning site? :PPPPP
November 30, 2011 at 10:40 am #21651Larisa, this has nothing to do about quality. It is about content updates.
Do you think 20$/month is it with the current update speed?“Constant updates, changes, features, and more. There’s a lot on TextFugu right now, but there’s going to be more a year, month, or even day from now.” – TextFugu
November 30, 2011 at 10:59 am #21652I’m glad I didn’t have to pay 220$ (has been 11 months since I’m here). And I don’t think textfugu has reached intermediaire yet.

I try to put out 1-2 lessons and 10-20 kanji per week, plus a few other little thingsNovember 30, 2011 at 11:20 am #21657I bought lifetime because it’s a much better deal. I guess that goes towards why I don’t mind the current pace of updates, it has felt like I got my moneys worth already.
November 30, 2011 at 11:48 am #21664People are paying for a service, if they don’t feel that the service has lived up to expectations then it’s natural that there will be complaints. I’m sure Koichi can handle that, he’s running a business after all.
Back when I signed up the site was advertising a lesson every week. At the start of this year Koichi said his goal was to finish all the basic content by the end of 2011, which was to be 6 seasons or more (this was before the seasons were split in half). Obviously that goal isn’t even close to being achieved, but stuff happens.
I’m not going to complain about spending the money, because hey, I knew the risks when I signed up and I’ve long since moved on to other resources. I still want to support Koichi’s efforts because I appreciate what he’s trying to do and his site was a help to me, so I don’t want to be down on the guy. But at the same time I can completely understand why people are disappointed.

November 30, 2011 at 12:02 pm #21665Sigh, I’ll stay out of it. I guess I don’t understand because I haven’t been here as long, but right now I feel like $20 is completely worth it. Perhaps that will change with time. Who knows?

>So you’re saying the textbook is “incomplete”?
Well… yeah. If stuff keeps getting added, how could that be “complete”? :P>I guess I just can’t wrap my head around someone providing a fun/ affordable source for learning something, but when it no longer meets your needs you don’t think its good enough? If this is how you feel, were ALL the lessons this way? Were you thinking this the entire time? Did you feel that every single lesson was lacking? Or just the later ones? What the heck guys! I love(d) TextFugu, but all I’m saying is that it’s not been updated fast enough, so unless they add conversational material or I stop learning Japanese for the next 6 months (unlikely haha), then it will never be able to meet my needs. I did the trial lessons and loved it. I did Season 1 and loved it. I did a bunch of Season 2 and loved. And then I sat twiddling my thumbs while waiting for Koichi to finish updating the Season 2 lessons (and adding the rest of them) and get onto Season 3. Then I thought “I should probably learn some stuff instead of twiddling my thumbs”, so I did. And now that he’s put up a lesson on nominalisation, I just think “Pfft! I learned that on my own 6 months ago when I was waiting for Season 3 to start.”.
Basically, you pay for the whole textbook, but only get use of half of it. If $120 is, in a sense, the price of the whole textbook, that means you’ve paid $60 more than you ought to have. My university textbooks are around £40 each (whatever that is in $) and they are whole, complete, comprehensive books. TextFugu is half the textbook they are (in amount of content) and is currently going for almost twice as much. Once it’s finished, it’ll be worth every $, but in the mean time, for us “early adopters”, us “beta testers”, it’s not been worth that amount at all. There really should have been a reduced price for this beta stage, bringing it up to full price once it’s done.
>I mean if it’s so easy…. why don’t you guys create a Japanese learning site? :PPPPP
If I wanted to and was able to, yes, I’d create a Japanese learning SITE. But if I wanted to write a TEXTBOOK, I’d wait until it was done before releasing it to the public (or at least the core content written). What Koichi is doing now is what should be done AFTER the core stuff has been written. You don’t make the DVD bonus features before you finish filming the movie. You don’t start painting a shed before it’s finished being built. You don’t… etc.So yeah, it used to be good but now it’s fallen so far behind that it’s not good any more.
I agree with Elenkis: I appreciate what Koichi is trying to do, but at present, the textbook just isn’t good enough. Anyone buying it more than, say, 6 months before completion is losing out.
(This post hasn’t been as coherent as I’d have liked – I can see I’ve rambled a little haha)
