Hello everybody! I’m so happy to finally get “really” started with Textfugu. I still can’t get over how insanely adorable this site’s logo/mascot is. <3 Does this pufferfish have a name?
I hail from Vancouver, BC. My real name is Apsara (pronounced “AP-SARAH”), owing to my mother’s Cambodian origin and my father’s love for the Khmer classical dance called Apsara. But online, I go by Mimitchi, an old reminder of my past love for Tamagotchi when I was ten. It has stuck for all these years.
I got into Japanese like so many other people – through exposure to anime from a young age. When I was five years old, I became obsessed with Hello Kitty, Pokemon (Pikachu specifically) and Sailor Moon. Back then of course, I had no idea that stuff was from Japan, until I became best friends with Selina, a half-Japanese, half-French girl, whose mother still sends to Japanese language school every Saturday. Though I probably would have gotten into other anime without her, I credit her for introducing me to Studio Ghibli and KAT-TUN. xDD (Though music wise, I prefer Visual Kei. X Japan and Versailles!! I actually saw X Japan in Vancouver last year, they were amazing!)
Speaking of Ghibli, I had actually watched My Neighbor Totoro years ago as a child, without knowing where it came from. I fell in love with it, and when Selina showed me Laputa, I felt enlightened. The latter is now my favourite movie of all time – I can’t recall how many times I’ve watched it in Japanese with subtitles. (I never liked the dub… even though Disney did a great job on everything else!)
Other interests of mine include piano, which I’ve been playing since I was 7 (mostly classical music and some ragtime – Chopin is my fav). More recently, I’ve been into Lolita fashion, and have been slowly building up a wardrobe of stuff I’ve found locally. I’m really excited to go to France for my 12th grade class trip, since I’ll finally be able to buy my first brand Lolita items! I naturally dream of shopping for my dream wardrobe in Japan one day, and I’d rather know the language before going there, hopefully with my friend Selina. (She seems to have already decided that we’re going…some day..)
Anyway, I look forward to studying Japanese the Textfugu way! I’ve also purchased RTK1, and though I’ve learned a couple of the Kanji ages ago, I still need to come up with some kind of regular schedule.. I’m terrible with regular study, even with piano, which is one of my biggest passions.
To finish up, here’s me with a Tarepanda mug!
And one of my Lolita outfits.. <3~Mimitchi

I think the name of the fish is Fugu… or at least that’s what I call it. Studio Ghibli works are also among my favorites, I became really interested in anime only after I’ve seen Princess Mononoke.
As far as Japanese goes, I think that with TextFugu and RTK you are well on your way to success. Not to mention you have a friend to practice with and, eventually, travel to Japan. Lucky you!
Good luck with studying!
