Is it wrong of me to only want to use textfugu initially and not want to break out into a bunch of other resources? I’m a bit OCD on things like this and too many options at once kind of put me off. I’m wondering if anyone else is like this and prefers focusing on one resource before taking on the vast ocean that is Japanese learning resources.

For me personally, slowly adding in new resources has worked best over time. Mixing too many methodologies gets confusing. When you decide to add in more, there are some great threads people have started where you can get a fairly good idea of which resources people find the most useful. I think kanji is where TextFugu will take the longest to become truly useful (as in, it’ll take a long time before sufficient is added to the site).

TextFugu has been really great for the basics, imho. It’s a good place to start.

when it comes to kanji and vocab you should look elsewhere. I am not a big fan of using lists other people compiled (except at the early stages). once you have you basic vocab down, move to learning what you want to know how to say. (ie look shit up in dictionaries)

Yeah, I’m still way early on. I just keep seeing people recommending so many things and have so many resources available that its kinda crazy. I’ll figure it out… eventually.

I usually only get to about the third chapter of anything before I lose interest and do something else. So I like to use loads of different sources.

There is nothing desirable about this state of affairs.

Ultimately do what works best for you but don’t be afraid of getting friendly with jisho.org.

I know the feeling, but I think it’s worth sticking to TextFugu until you finish all the lessons and then start looking at other resources out there.

I’m still using TextFugu and plan to do so until I get to Season 7 Chapter 4 which is currently the latest lesson. After that, I’ll start using other resources while still doing new TextFugu lessons once they’re published.

I’ll definitely begin to make use of my Gakuu membership. I’ll check out Tae Kim’s site. I might buy Genki or take a look at Elementary Japanese again. I could do RTK. For listening/speaking practice there’s always Pimsleur and Japanesepod101.

If I was to do it again I wouldn’t do ultimate vocab on TextFugu, some of the verbs (like transitive/intransitive) are so similar and TextFugu doesn’t explain the differences very well on the Anki decks. I wish I started Core vocab decks earlier instead either on iKnow or Anki, they’re much better I think.

Make sure you use Lang-8, I think that’s one resource you can’t afford to not use alongside this site.

@Yggbert: Hmmm… I guess Core might have been better to start with, but then it’s not like it takes the same amount of effort to cover the words from the Ultimate lists again. Whenever I come across “Ultimate” vocab while going through the new words in the Core list, I can usually just click “Easy” or “Very Easy”.

Also, I don’t use Lang-8 any more – I want to focus on learning vocab and being able to read (a little grammar too, obviously). Some people like writing though, and that’s cool.

I like using Lang-8 because it stops me from thinking “Ha, I know how to use you now particle, I don’t need to practice” ;)

It also helps me remember vocab when I’m actually using it too, especially compounds. I try to post at least once every 2-3 days on there because I’m also focusing a lot on vocab. (and a particle book)

Even if I wanted to post on Lang-8, I’ve got no idea what to say XD Maybe besides 猫はマットの上に座りました ;) (wait, is that right?)

I usually post random sentences I think of to test out recently learnt words and grammar. I actually get quite worried when writing them, I know you learn from mistakes but I hate it when I get a whole ton of stuff marked red! It doesn’t happen *too* often but I have had a few cases of an entire sentence being basically useless. That mostly happens when I start writing a journal feeling like this: http://i.imgur.com/88DBA.jpg
