こんにちは!私はジャックです。はじめまして!
I decided to learn Japanese because I want to be able to import Japanese exclusive video games and understand them. I also would like to get into manga and anime, and knowing Japanese can be important if a certain series is only available in Japanese or the English dub is inferior. I’m also saving up to go on vacation in Japan, and I’m hoping to go on many more vacations there. Also, I kind of hope that I might get to be a taiko drummer one day.
I learned how to read hiragana and katakana pretty much in only one day. I used an app called Dr. Moku, which comes with its own built in mnemonic devices for all the characters, and they all really stuck out to me and helped me remember. I had to learn through the free trial of a program called Human Japanese how to write the characters without them looking terrible and that certain characters like さ and き look different written vs. printed.
Before, I tried to make a set of flash cards for every row once a day, and I started out only with katakana because hiragana looked too complex to begin with. I quit because I really had trouble memorizing.
I also know a good bit of Spanish because of school, my sister who took Spanish in college, and DuoLingo. I’d like to know if anyone feels like learning two languages causes any problems for anyone. I feel as though learning Spanish has helped me a bit. It’s not hard to remember what the vowel sounds of Japanese are, because they’re the same as Spanish’s vowels! I’m also familiar with the idea of omitting the subject when it’s not necessary (Es un boligrafo. ペンです。) I already know about infinitive form and how conjugating changes the infinitive’s ending and can change the stem.

I think that each subsequent language you learn is easier to pick up than the last, because you gain a better understanding of language as a whole and your own techniques for learning it. That being said, learning two languages at once takes double the effort! I’m guessing you’re learning Spanish for school, so it probably won’t be as bad as if you were learning both independently.
Good luck, and I hope to see you around the forums!

Not from the desk of Eihiko. Eihiko's boss took his desk away from him.March 25, 2014 at 9:46 am #44584Its pretty cool that there is grammatical and pronunciation similarities in Spanish and Japanese. It seems you are pretty efficient in Language learning already. Hope you enjoy the journey:)
