Though based in Tokyo my son brought his bride’s family, friends and me all the way to Vancouver, British Columbia. The Japanese all spoke very passable English, one or two extremely well. Well, I’ve committed to visiting them all in Japan in November, so I have 6 months to become fluent (LOL).

Congrats to your son, and good luck to you. If you manage to get fluent in just six months, though, do let us know your secret. =)

Where in Japan are the bride’s family from?

Yes, the 6-months fluency target is reaching way too far!

My daughter-in-law is a pediatrician, originally from Sapporo (where her family still resides), based in Tokyo, and currently on assignment in Berlin, Germany. Thanks for expressing interest.

Hello and welcome to TF :). Congrats to you and your son, and you’d be surprised what you can learn in six months.

Thank you, Hashi and kanjiman8, I hope you are right. 25 years ago I had to learn Portuguese because I was marrying a Brazilian. My family has got to stop marrying people from non-English-speaking countries !
