@joel & @mike: Thanks for backing me up.
@tubatime1010: There’s rarely such a thing as “thinking too deeply” about a subject. Perhaps it’s the case that you’re not thinking deeply enough. And whether or not Japanese and English share common linguistic roots, it’s certainly the case that humans share common mental hardware, and therefore have probably generated languages that have more commonalities than differences with respect to their function and form. If you’re going to respond to every forum post with a crass variation on the theme of “don’t bother asking,” then I propose that you don’t answer any more forum posts and instead let people with answers respond.
October 7, 2012 at 10:54 am #36044Clearly someone who barely understands a negative form of a noun knows way better than someone who has been studying for years.
Yeah…
lol
October 7, 2012 at 11:51 am #36046Well, no. Jrc doesn’t know better. Hence the questions for help, posted in a forum designed to help, the forum of an online resource specifically meant for helping.
Anyway, it’s about time I started learning just when to whip out the “don’t feed the troll” signs. I always spot the troll about five posts too late…
October 7, 2012 at 11:57 am #36047What is the point in asking for advice if you don’t accept it
October 7, 2012 at 12:00 pm #36048Because the advice was “don’t ask for advice”.
October 7, 2012 at 12:01 pm #36049October 7, 2012 at 12:03 pm #36050okay this is just stupid, why are my posts this long?

October 7, 2012 at 12:05 pm #36053You’re leaning on the enter key?
October 7, 2012 at 8:40 pm #36061Everyone has something valid to contribute (in most cases I suppose) but although tuba’s advice while perhaps appearing like anti-advice was perfectly legit advice that I tend to agree with more so than not.
There will be concepts which are easy to compare to English, ie simple vocabulary (赤い = red). But it starts to get really really messy really really quickly and in 95% of the cases, even my Japanese friends cannot clarify it for me. I’ve slowly learned when I should ask, and when I should just learn as is.
Language reflects the culture from which it originated and as we all know, Japanese culture is VERY different from Europe or North America. Trying to compare these on any grammatical or emotional level is basically pointless.
On the other hand, by studying the language you can gain a deeper understanding of the culture which is beneficial in many other ways.
October 8, 2012 at 5:10 am #36068I am crass in most of my advice, yes. I intend to be. It’s a modification on the Missingno15 method. Missing trolls with AKB and throws in a little real information. I replace AKB with being crass.
You may ask why I choose to be crass…if not…too bad because you’re about to find out.
I’ve been around the block a few times when it comes to Japanese resources and there are two commonalities that I see everywhere I look: hand-holding and the encouragement of bad habits. You know what else I see? PEOPLE FAILING. Those who forge their own path, can openly learn from others and have a tough skin tend to be the ones who stay around a LOT longer. In fact, many of the replies on this page prove that. Many of those who have been here for a long time are the ones who joke around. They’re the ones who can take a little criticism and aren’t afraid to troll a little here and there.
I’m going to go out on a limb here: If you’re uptight then you’re learning the wrong language. Japanese culture is a giant troll when you really start to get into it.
October 8, 2012 at 7:17 am #36069I think we can all agree to keep AKB48 out of this. :)
Seriously though, the big difference between Missing’s style and trolling is Missing is using cute girls being cute. That’s something I think most people would rather see. ;)
I do have to ask Tuba, whether I agree with you or not, and I have no comment to be honest. If you’re tired of people asking questions then perhaps you need to take a break from putting yourself in a position to answer questions?
