    Hi all,

I really want to stand up in front of everyone and say はじめまして、よろしくお願いします and then write my name on a white/black board. マンディです

I’m Mandy, based just south of London UK. I’ve been studying Japanese for 3 years because:

I want to travel to Japan and walk the 88 temples of Shikoku
I want to live and work in Japan (and I’ve been promised that this can be made to happen)
I want to present at tech events all over Japan
I want to be able to listen to Anime movies without any subtitles
I want to be able to walk into Mandarake and ask for specific Manga
I want to be able to talk to my Japanese friends in Japanese without fearing embarrassment
I want to uncover a Kaiju nest in North Hokkaido
I want to appear on Japanese television one day as a comedian (don’t we all)

I’ve used 500 different methods of study, including Books, Video, Audio, Genki, Yes Japan!, Japanese Pod 101 (their podcasts are great), flashcards, Anki, Tim Sensei, Tae Kim, Obenkyo, Kanjidict, jisho.org, Steins;Gate, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, etc. At the moment I still suck pretty badly so I’ve been cementing my Kanji knowledge which was limited to JLPT5/4 but which now thanks to wanikani.com is all over the place, and now I’ve taken advantage of the summer offer on TextFugu and the ridiculous exchange rate (USD -> GBP).

So that’s me, if your in London or Surrey and you know of any good places to go to practice you Japanese, do let me know.

    Cheers

    -Mandy

I’m here because I need some structure to my learning. It’s been all over the place so far and I still find it very hard to construct anything more than very basic sentences. I’m also unable to understand anything that anyone says to me, except with friends who take pity on me and speak とてもゆっくり。 I’ve actually resisted TextFugu in the past because I thought it might be too basic, but the price was such that it seemed worth giving it a try.

I’m expecting that my Japanese will be better for spending time here and that some of the things that I keep on learning over and over will finally stick in my head.

    Cheers

    Hello + Welcome!!

You seem to have a pretty solid plan/dream worked out. And you already seem to know quite a lot. I get the impression that you’re a lot further along than I am, so if you have any questions, I probably won’t be able to help but I’m 100% sure other folks here will be able to!

Good luck and I hope you make it to Japan!

Thanks! I’m actually lucky enough to have been to Japan 4 times in the last 3 years which is why I’m so embarrassed about my inability to construct sentences under pressure. My only real success has been buying Tokkaido line tickets to Kyoto in Shibuya station, even buying coffee at Starbucks or Tully’s usually ended in tears.

Harkening back to my days learning Russian, it really sounds like you need a conversation partner! I am a total newbie at Japanese, but may I suggest just lurking on the Teamspeak channel for a bit? Eavesdropping is a great way to learn. ‘_^ I used to sit at the table next to the Russian exchange students and do exactly that to practice listening.

Thanks for the advice, I think you’ve pretty much summed it up, I need people I can talk with. A couple of years ago I used to meet once a week on a weekday morning with a friend in our office in Japan via Google Hangouts. He wanted to improve his English and I wanted to practice Japanese. It was horrible for me as I just couldn’t say anything, so we stopped doing it.

I’ll try Teamspeak at some point, port seems to be blocked on my firewall currently.

    Cheers

well there are currently 4 people on the Ts3 server (including me) we pretty much just ask eachother questions like is いちご a Strawberry or if a sentence was said correctly there isn’t much really going on atm so I really wouldn’t bother.
