Hello,
I just posted on lang-8 and got this correction back and I was hoping someone could explain it to me:
I wrote: Studying japanese is fun. 日本語を たのしいだ べんきょうする
I’m trying to switch into casual japanese, so it looks like i tagged on a “だ” to my i-adjective which wasn’t needed. Anyways, The correction came back:
日本語をべんきょうするのはたのしい。
So I see the order changed (I thought the verb usually came at the end of the sentence, maybe someone could give me a synopsis of word order real quick?), the だ is gone from the tanoshii as expected, but my question is really what’s going on with the ‘のは’. I feel like I’ve done this before and thought it was two particles on the end of the ‘to study’, but is it actually another word all on it’s own?

Your original sentence was something like “studying Japanese in a fun way”, if you ignore the bad conjugation on the adjective. =P
AnonymousIt is a nominalized “no”. By the way, as for the たのしいだ, sure people do say it, but I’d advise you not to do this kind of thing when writing a journal. Moreover, more people say たのしいんだ。
Thanks for the help everyone, and so quick! I’m still in chapter 5 so I hadn’t seen that nominalization part yet (not that my journal is a perfect reflection of the previous chapters, but I’m trying!). But it’s nice to know there’s a chapter that covers it so I can get to the understanding immediately!
Tsetycoon: when you say ‘たのしいんだ’ what is the ん doing there? I realize the だ is out of place on a casual i-adjective, but then how does the ん make it ok to put it back on?

It’s not that you’re adding an ん to make the だ ok – it’s that you’re adding んだ. It still wouldn’t come in the middle of a sentence, though. I can’t spot a lesson about it, but here is a forum thread:
