When writing journal entries, I often have to switch input language, from Canada-French (my usual keyboard layout) to Japanese. Things should be simple, but they’re not -_-
Thing is, I uninstalled the English language input, which, let’s be honest, is a stripped down version of Canada-French, with special characters on different keys than I’m used to. That should allow me to switch directly from JP to FR and back using alt+shift. In fact, when I reboot my computer, it does work correctly for a few minutes (these few minutes are great *_* ).
My issue is that soon after, the English input comes back. That means I now have EN-FR-JP. When writing a journal entry, I very often switch input methods, which means I have to switch once to do FR-JP, then twice to go back to FR (skipping English).
I thought my brain would get used to it, but it does not xD Dozens of times in every entry, I realize that the special characters aren’t working correctly (because I somehow ended on EN), or that I’m writing in romaji (because I was on EN and switched EN-FR, thinking I was already on FR to switch FR-JP), etc. I ended some of my entries being a bit mad due to the constant annoyance of that (I didn’t exaggerate when I said dozens of times per entry). I end up doing tons of stupid mistakes because I get too lazy/annoyed to switch input methods and I try to write everything English first, then everything Japanese (so I often mismatch stuff, or change my mind about an example, causing the Japanese version not to match the English one anymore, etc.)
Anyone knows how to uninstall the English input completely, or at least make it go away from the input selection once and for all? Like I mentioned earlier, it does work correctly for a few minutes after a reboot. Then EN mysteriously come back and ruins everything -_-
Here’s a screenshot of my language settings (I’m using Win7 64bits family ed.): http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3479/whyenglish.png
Sorry it’s in French, but you can clearly see that EN appears in my language bar despite it NOT being in the list of installed languages… unless I have to go somewhere else to do that?I did try to google stuff like “language bar remove english” and stuff like that, but I can’t seem to find anything =/ Thanks in advance for any help ^^;
June 5, 2011 at 10:18 am #12098Seems like this person had the same problem and solved it: http://www.toytowngermany.com/lofi/index.php/t24808.html
Hope it helps.
June 5, 2011 at 12:04 pm #12101From the time of the posts (2005), it is not Win7. Despite that, that is pretty much what I did: removing any and all reference to U.S. English in the language settings. In these posts, they also mentioned the source of the issue being that it was still selected for non-unicode programs. In my case, it is not, as I set Japanese for non-unicode ^^;
June 6, 2011 at 6:51 am #12139Solved the problem yet?
It’s hard to list all possible solutions here, since I have no idea what your settings look like or what you did while uninstalling English keyboard layout (just an example – it’s impossible to uninstall keyboard layout while it’s set as default, it will just keep coming back <- maybe this happened?).
Anyway, as a quick solution until you find something better, why don't you just change key settings for language inputs? Instead of using alt+shift to toggle between inputs, create a new key combo for French input and another one for Japanese. EN might still show up in your Langauge bar, but you won't accidentally end up using it.
June 6, 2011 at 7:54 am #12140I haven’t solved the issue yet. In fact, I noticed it when I started with Textfugu a few months ago. However, now that I’m getting better in Japanese, that means I use it more and more in my log entries, switching more and more between input methods. This is more anoying now than it ever was xD
My settings are in that screenshot I linked in my first post (http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3479/whyenglish.png ).
Non-unicode characters: Japanese
Default input language: French (Canada)
Installed services: French (Canada); Japanese (Japan)I’ll go for a second combo if everything else fails ^^; Using only one combo to switch is much more natural though =/
June 6, 2011 at 10:02 am #12150Could it be that the default language of your system is English? If it is, unfortunately, nothing short of reinstalling Windows and choosing French as default won’t help. If you don’t know the default language, just check which language packs you have installed. Two should be installed (Japanese and ?), the one missing is system’s.
If you are lucky, English language pack will be installed. Just uninstall it.June 6, 2011 at 12:32 pm #12155Where do I find out the language packs installed on my system? I’ve spent the last 20 mins googling and the best I could find is this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/how-to-uninstall-extra-language-packs-from-windows/9ac2194d-1665-498d-8571-32e4cce6efa9
The first answer (Accola’s) was the best one (the one from the MS guy didn’t work; I can’t find language packs in the Windows Update list). When looking at the language packs to uninstall, I have this: http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5189/languagepacks.png
Only French (which is mentioned to be the system language and default language). No English. Not even Japanese o_O
June 6, 2011 at 10:46 pm #12184Yeah, additional lang packs should be listed in that place, or among Windows updates (if pack was installed through update and not manually from downloaded file). What puzzles me now is the fact Japanese is not visible either :S
Well, there is one more thing to try. Copy your current lang settings to all accounts. Some people say this helps. This feature is located in Advanced tab of Regional and Language options. I have only vague idea of how and why this could work, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Beyond that, I really don’t know what to recommend next. Sry T_T
June 7, 2011 at 7:56 am #12195I already tried that, and it didn’t change a thing. Thanks anyway for your help ^^
