Hey all, I was wondering if anyone out there used their 3DS for practicing their Japanese. The only things I could see it used for is the 6 in 1 Dictionary(which doesn’t have stunning reviews), the browser to look at things (like TextFugu ;)), and Nintendo Letterbox/Swapnote(Need Japanese speaking friends). Of course, you can always use your DS versions of learning methods like 漢字そのままDS楽引辞典, My Japanese Coach or whatever else. It is a shame it is region locked for the newer 3ds titles though.. Who knows maybe when the pirates start sailing the waters, they will make some lockpicks?

I think its best used with other resources, and you may need to to grind your way through the first 15 lessons.

April 24, 2012 at 10:01 am #29827For the actual 3DS it’s pretty poor because of region locking, if you get an R4 card there’s some decent DS learning games you can try out, or just play Japanese games. I’m sure the 3DS will get hacked soon enough, region locking is just stupid.
April 24, 2012 at 11:41 am #29832While I’m sure there’s a reason for region locking, I personally can’t agree with cutting off a potential secondary market. It’s because of region locking that I won’t be buying a 3DS at all (I would only have bought it to enjoy Japanese games) so with that Nintendo has lost a potential customer for any games I would’ve bought, plus the system itself. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
That’s why I love my region-free first-gen DS and PS3. Two wise choices on the part of Nintendo and Sony.
April 24, 2012 at 12:27 pm #29834I think it’s so some countries can’t import games for cheaper, I can’t really see any other reasoning behind it. I know a lot of people in Europe import games from the UK instead of their own countries because of price differences.
What really baffles me is that Nintendo didn’t even include a multi-voltage charger for the 3DS. The hell is up with that? So you have to buy an additional charger if you want to charge a portable device abroad? Get real Nintendo…
Nintendo always come out with some really backwards crap. I know you can charge it via USB but I don’t think they include one of those cables either. I don’t remember getting one with my 3DS.

April 24, 2012 at 1:05 pm #29838Planning to buy a 3DS for the Professor Layton / Phoenix Wright crossover game, if that ever comes out. Not sure it’s worth a whole console for just one game, though. =P
Also, that video? Gumshoe (whatever his Japanese name is) sounds completely different to how I imagined he’d sound.
