Hi there! I’m having trouble typing Katakana with Google IME. For some reason, I can’t find how to type the – (long katakana vowel). When I type “-” I just find this: ・
I’ve tried another keys but none would work. How do I do the long katakana vowel?
I have Windows 7 and an European keyboard.
    Thank you!

Hm. According to the internet, Google IME is just “-” which is the same as Windows’ Japanese IME. My only thought might be related to it being a Euro keyboard. Maybe try the Microsoft IME? That’s what I use, and once you get the STUPID keyboard shortcuts figured out it works pretty well. ALT+SHIFT to switch keyboards, ALT+CAPS to change from romaji to hiragana, again to get to katakana, but then CTRL+CAPS to get back to hiragana. Otherwise everything should be the same as Google. Space to scroll through words, enter to input.

Hmm. I get the interpunct when I hit the / key, so what happens when you push /?

    EN-DASH (–)

    Mac: option+hyphen key
    Windows: ctrl+minus on numeric keypad

    EM-DASH (—)

    Mac: option+shift+hyphen key
    Windows: alt+ctrl+minus on numeric keypad

    - – — – -

Yeah, they’re not quite the same thing. The “prolonged sound mark” (called 長音符 = ちょうおんぷ in Japanese) is not quite an en- or em-dash. Nor is it a kanji 一.

Though since ロブ brought it up, what happens if you push the minus key on the numpad?

I just use the dash key when typing katakana and it’s the correct size, but I’m on a Mac. I use the EM (—) for romaji though.

Hi! I think I fixed it. It was quite hidden but I found the key. It’s, actually, the minus key, but I have to activate the number pad to use it. It isn’t the – next to the dot, but whatever. Thank you so much for the advise.
Joel, when I push / I get &, but now, as Justin suggested, that may be because of my Euro keyboard
