I’m in Season 1, Chapter 4-6, and I’m kind of getting tripped up at the 1-10 Hiragana section. I did Anki and the Drag-and-Drop exercises, but once I got halfway through the Practice Worksheet, I realized I didn’t know how to actually write anything.

So now I’m unsure of how to proceed. Should I start focusing on writing, and proceeding only when I can both write the kana correctly and recognize them, or should I not worry about the writing as much as the recognization of the kana?

Textfugu doesn’t focus on writing (by hand, at least) at all. The idea is that everybody types these days so handwriting is a dead medium. Personally, I think that’s pretty stupid. I’d say go ahead and learn to write them, but you can learn writing and continue on in Textfugu at the same time. Don’t wait around.

Gotcha, so I guess when it’s says to write, that means to type the character? The next section says to write the ten hiragana, so it seems it’s implying that this is all a typing type deal.

I’ve actually found hand writing useful for learning to recognize the characters because of the muscle memories formed, or if I’m struggling to recognize one I can write them out in the air with my finger to help me remember the shapes.

I agree with Catherine, Writing the Hiragana helped with memorization (or I should say recognition) for me. You might be feeling a little overwhelmed. Take a minute to learn hiragana. The thing that you should keep in mind is that you should recognize the hiragana letters first and then learn to write them. But don’t memorize the whole alphabet then move on to writing. Learn the first column then learn how to write them. Learning how to write them after learning how to read them solidifies everything. And gives you a better grip on things. I think!

    For memorizing/recognition:
Use the downloadable Hiragana42 ebook that you can download for free on here. If you go to the dashboard (Home page) and scroll down you should see it. Go through that and that should help you tremendously with recognition. So that you remember that あ->A、い->I、う->U、え->E、お->O It did for me, I had a horrible time remembering them before using this.

    For writing help:
I also used this website for stroke order, this shows you how to write them. Since there is a specific way. (http://www.easyjapanese.org/write_hiragana.html ) Take your time and work with just one column at a time. So start off with just the simple vowels, a, i, u, e, o, (あ、い、う、え、お)and work your way through.

Hoped this helped you! and Good luck!

Thanks for all the help, all of you. I’ll definitely make sure to get my hiragana writing down on my days off, and I’ll use Anki/study Hiragana42 during my work breaks. Thanks again guys!
