In one of the lessons when you learn about は and が, the following example comes up:
Q. わたしのくるまはすきですか？
A. No, I hate your car. Translation →
いいえ、あなたのくるまがきらいです
how come in the translation its written が？ the subject has already been identified, he wants to know about his -car-, so obviously we should focus on the second part of the sentence. so shouldn’t we be using は？

Best guess: the topic of the response is an implied “I” that’s being omitted – that is, the car is merely the subject of a 〜は〜が construction. 私は車が嫌い kind of thing.
Honestly, though, Koichi’s explanation of は and が needs work…
